OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify highly accurate quantitative methods for evaluating the occlusal vertical dimension by using cephalometric radiographs to analyze the craniofacial hard tissue landmarks in 30 cases with normal occlusions.METHODS: A total of 30 subjects with normal occlusions and aged between 20 and 30 years old were included in the study. Cephalometric radiographs were obtained and analyzed using the Winceph 8.0 measurement software. Landmark points were identified and measured.RESULTS: The mean distribution difference of the center angle (CA) and lower angle (LA) of the face was not statistically significant (t = -1.490, P = 0.147). The CA and LA had a significantly linear correlation (r = 0.976, P = 0.000), and the regression equation was y = 0.298 + 0.997x.CONCLUSION: The CA can be used to assess and quantify the occlusal vertical dimension in clinical practice.

Background: Currently, limb salvage therapy has become the standard treatment of malignant bone tumors way, but improper treatments will result in tumor recurrence, secondary infection, internal fixation or prosthesis loosening. Objective: Based on the traditional surgical principle for metastatic bone tumors of the limbs, this study designed a user-friendly, individualized, simplistic palliative treatment regimen from the actual conditions of patients to observe the reasonability, clinical efficacy and prognosis of bone cement filling combined with internal fixation in the treatment of metastatic malignant bone tumors. Methods: Thirty-one patients with metastatic malignant bone tumors who required salvage treatment were screened from the Department of Orthopedics, the 421 Hospital of Chinese PLA, and their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. All the 31 patients were divided into two groups: tumor removal+internal fixation group (non-chemoradiotherapy group, n=11) treated with bone cement filling plus plate internal fixation (palliative treatment); tumor removal+internal fixation+chemoradiotherapy group (chemoradiotherapy group, n=20), treated with radiotherapy before internal fixation plus plate internal fixation with limb salvage. The follow-up period was 4-38 months, averagely 18 months. Results and Conclusion: The follow-up results showed that in the non-chemoradiotherapy group, all the 11 patients survived, who could live independently and have good motor functions; in the chemoradiotherapy group, 17 of the 20 patients survived and the rest three patients died of tumor metastasis, their poor conditions and complications at 9 and 13 months after internal fixation. In patients undergoing tumor removal+plate internal fixation with limb salvage, the integrated scores for nerve and motor functions were increased by more than level 1. These findings confirm that a simple palliative therapy of bone cement filling and internal fixation without chemoradiotherapy is better for metastatic malignant bone tumors patients who require limb salvage.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether angiostatin inhibits tissue neovascularization. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of angiostatin on rat corneal neovascularization. METHODS: Corneal neovascularization models were established in 24 rats after alkali burns, which were randomly divided into four groups: control group treated with normal saline, and three experimental groups treated with different-concentration angiostatin solution (25, 50, 75 mg/L), four times per day. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: There were few new vessels in the four groups at 3 days after modeling, and corneal neovascularization appeared obviously in the control group as compared with other three groups. At 3-7 days, the speed of corneal neovascularization accelerated, and new vessels in the control group were thicker compared with other groups. The area of corneal neovascularization in the three experimental groups was less than that in the control group after alkali burns (P < 0.05). 75 mg/L angiostatin drop group had the smallest neovascularized corneal area (P < 0.05). Real-time PCR results showed that there was a significant difference in the mRNA expression of CD31 among different groups (P < 0.01). Western blot findings demonstrated that the CD31 expression was lower in the three experimental groups than the control group, and lowered with the increase of angiostatin concentrations, indicating that the angiostatin eye drops can inhibit the coreal neovascularization.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, with the continuous development of hematology and related fields of basic and clinical research, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has become an effective means of treatment for hematologic malignancies, or even the only way to cure certain blood diseases. OBJECTIVE: According to the literature retrieval results, to comparatively analyze the literatures on the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for treating hematological malignancies in SCI database and to explore the future development tendency of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for treating hematological malignancies. METHODS: A retrieval was performed for the literature of the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for treating hematological malignancies, using key words of "hematopoietic stem cell, transplantation, acute myelogenous leukemia, non-hodgkin lymphoma, chronic myelocytic leukemia" between 2001-01 and 2010-12 in SCI database. The retrieval results were analyzed, and the trends were described in words and graphics. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The overall literatures of the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for treating hematological malignancies had an upward trend from 2001 to 2010. United States published more literature than other countries, which play an important role in the field of the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for treating hematological malignancies. Most of literatures were published from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. This paper provides a valuable reference for researchers to understand the overview and present situation of this field.

Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is prevalent in individuals and recently, there are many studies focus on using simple and efficient methods for SAS detection instead of polysomnography. However, not much work has been done on using nonlinear behavior of the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The purpose of this study is to find a novel and simpler method for detecting apnea patients and to quantify nonlinear characteristics of the sleep apnea. 30 min EEG scaling exponents that quantify power-law correlations were computed using detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and compared between six SAS and six healthy subjects during sleep. The mean scaling exponents were calculated every 30 s and 360 control values and 360 apnea values were obtained. These values were compared between the two groups and support vector machine (SVM) was used to classify apnea patients. Significant difference was found between EEG scaling exponents of the two groups (p < 0.001). SVM was used and obtained high and consistent recognition rate: average classification accuracy reached 95.1 % corresponding to the sensitivity 93.2 % and specificity 98.6 %. DFA of EEG is an efficient and practicable method and is helpful clinically in diagnosis of sleep apnea. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York.
