Anaerobic systems produce biofuels and liquid waste known as bioles. In Sistemas Biobolsa® we evaluated anaerobic fermentation of cattle and pig manure for two months. The difference between the types of cattle and porcine biol obtained was determined by the One Factor Analysis of Variance and the physical and chemical parameters were evaluated. In bioles we daily monitored pH, temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), oxide reduction potential (ORP), total dissolved solids (TDS), percentage of sodium chloride, volatile solids (VS), total solids (ST.), ash, moisture, P, PO4, P2O5, N, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn and Cu in its ionic form. With a pH meter (HANNA HI-255) we determined pH, EC, TDS, NaCl, and with a multiparameter analyzer (HACH, HQ40d) OD and redox potential we evaluated. With gravimetric methods, we determined humidity, ST, SV, and ash; we measured macronutrients (P, P2O5, PO4, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-H) and K+) with a nutrient analyzer (HANNA HI-83215 ) and micronutrients with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (GBC AA 904). All analyses were performed in duplicate. The Sistemas Biobolsa® showed stability in its operation, in mesophilic conditions (variation of ±3σ in each parameter). There was a significant difference in Ca and Mg between types of excreta. Cattle biol showed 8.94 4mS cm-1, 658.9, 80.90 and 581 ppm in CE, NH4+, PO4 3- and K+ respectively while in porcine boil were 8.4 mS cm-1, 745.0, 39 and 521 ppm. The nutrients content of both bioles allows to be applied as fertilizers.

Cowpea is one of the most important grain legume crops worldwide. Although Pseudocercospora cruenta on cowpea was first observed in Mexico in 1976, this is the first documented report of this pathogen in Mexico. The fungus was isolated from symptomatic cowpea leaves collected from Nayarit state, Mexico and identified on the basis of morphology and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS). Pathogenicity was verified on cowpea plants. © 2013 Australasian Plant Pathology Society Inc.

The nixtamalization, production and storage of tortillas in refrigeration cause several changes on the starch structure, resulting in an increased crystallinity and therefore a higher content of resistant starch. The IR analysis for resistant starch (RS) showed a band at 1047 cm-1 associated to the retrogradation process; this band was due to the weakening of the intermolecular H-bonds. These associated together to form ordered regions. The Raman analysis shows a characteristic band at 856 cm-1 corresponding to C-C skeletal modes of glucose of α-1,4 glycosidic linkage starches, and a band at 480 cm-1 attributed to skeletal vibrations of the pyranose ring in the glucose unit of starches. These changes may be related to the polymerization degree of the starch molecules, as well as to the retrogradation of amylose and amylopectin. The spectrum of 13C CP-MAS/NMR for RS3 supports the results obtained by IR and Raman. Lipidic and proteic groups were observed which may be in the form of complexes with amylose. One can proclaim that the existence of the salt form is induced and stabilized by the interactions dominating the V amylose structure in the solid state. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All Rights Reserved.

Background: Innervation of the hypothalamus and median eminence arise from the dorsal and medial raphe nuclei (DRN and MRN, respectively). The hypothalamus regulates the secretion of gonadotropins, which in turn regulate the reproductive function of males and females. However, it is not known the role of raphe nuclei in male reproductive function. Our goal was to investigate the role of the DRN and MRN in the regulation of the testicular function and secretion of gonadotropins in prepubertal rats. Methods: Dihydroxytryptamine (5,6-DHT) in ascorbic acid was used to chemically lesion the DRN or MRN. Rats were treated at 30 days-of-age and sacrificed at 45 or 65 days-of-age. Sham-treated controls were injected with ascorbic acid only. Negative controls were untreated rats. The damage induced by the 5,6-DHT was monitored in coronal serial sections of DRN and MRN; only the animals in which lesion of the DRN or MRN was detected were included in this study. As output parameters, we measured the concentrations of noradrenaline (NA), dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) in the anterior (AH) and medial (MH) hypothalamus by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); whereas, circulating concentrations of gonadotropins and sexual steroids were measured by radioimmunoassay. Seminiferous epithelium and sperm quality were also evaluated. Results: Lesion of DRN or MRN does not induced changes in concentrations of LH, progesterone, and testosterone. Compared with the control group, the sham or lesion of the DRN or MRN did not modify noradrenaline or dopamine concentrations in the AH and MH at 45 or 65 days of age. Meanwhile, serotonin concentrations decreased significantly in lesioned rats. Lesion of DRN induced significantly lower concentrations of FSH regardless of age; similar lesion in the MRN had no impact on FSH levels. Sperm concentration and motility were significantly decreased in the same animals. The lesion of the MRN does not induced changes in the seminiferous epithelium or gonadotropin levels. Our results suggest that raphe nuclei regulate differentially the male reproductive functions. Conclusions: The DRN but not the MRN regulates the secretion of gonadotropins and testicular function. © 2015 Ayala et al.

Characterization of the compounds present in aguamiel (A. atrovirens) by standard methods can evaluate the potential health effect of aguamiel as a functional food or food ingredient. Aguamiel contained 89.61% moisture, 3.50% protein, 3.10% ash, and 61.31% total reduced sugars, of which 32.63% was total fructose and 28.68% was total glucose, while the fructooligosaccharides content was 15.51%. The aguamiel contained minerals such as potassium, calcium, and sodium in higher proportions, followed by iron, copper, magnesium, selenium and zinc. Were determined water-soluble vitamins B complex vitamins (B1, B2, B3 and B6) and ascorbic acid. It was found a total saponins content of 1.17 g/100 g of sample db, with anti-inflammatory activity. A total of nine essential and eight non-essential amino acids, of the 20 necessary for health, were determined in aguamiel. An additional characteristic was the phenolic compounds content, which exhibited antioxidant activity against DPPH and ABTS. The degree of polymerization of fructooligosaccharides was 5-10 determined by MALDI-TOF. The effect fructooligosaccharides prebiotics during in vitro fermentation and the quantification of shortchain fatty acids were evaluated. © 2015, Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana Iztapalapa.
