Introduction: Transmethylation modifies configuration and proceeds via formaldehyde. It has a significant role for example in epigenetic regulation. The whole methyl-pool can be evaluated by the measurement of bound formaldehyde. Aim: The bound formaldehyde was measured in wheat, bean, beetroot, cabbage, broiler-and rabbit liver. The relationship between transmethylation and redox homeosthasis was studied in the liver of domestic animals, and in the rat model of fatty liver. Method: The diet of rats was enriched with cholesterol, sunflower oil and cholic acid. The bound formaldehyde was determined by overpressured layer chromatography. The hydrogen-donating ability was measured with 1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazylt free radical using spectrophotometric measurement. Results: Beans had the most bound formaldehyde. The liver of broilers possessed significantly elevated hydrogen-donating ability and transmethylation ability. Rats with severe fatty liver had significantly less bound formaldehyde and the hydrogen-donating ability tendentiously decreased. Conclusions: These results draw attention to the diet, especially in obesity and obesity-related diseases.

Information on the nutritional values of reptile feeds is limited. In this study alternative invertebrate preys (Madagascar hissing cockroach, rusty red cockroach, dubia cockroach, black and banana cricket) and turtle feed (dried crabs, dried and frozen whole fish, pellet, lyophilized beef hearth) were analysed. Dried crabs had much higher calcium content (39.1-59.8 g/kg) than cricket and cockroach species (0.7- 2.5 g/kg DM). The crude fat content of the crabs is lower (2.3-5.2% DM) than that of the cricket and cockroach species (11.5-30.5% DM). Relevant differences were not found between cockroaches and crickets. Commercial pellet had very low calcium and crude protein content (2.71 g/kg and 27.3% DM) related to the other feeds. All of the examined invertebrates are adequate for reptiles. For carnivore turtles, whole frozen fish is a good choice, which is an adequate source of calcium and vitamins.

Good nutrition is vital for maintaining health and preventing diseases both in humans and animals. Organic foods are high in nutritional quality and quantity, and have no or low residues, therefore they can play an important role in promoting human and animal health. Organic plant products have lower water content, reserve higher nutrient density, are richer in iron, magnesium, vitamin C, and antioxidants; and are more balanced also with essential amino acids. Organically-raised animals have better overall health, more resistance to diseases and lower ratio of saturated to unsaturated fat. Organically raised and grass fed animals have higher level of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids and favourable omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio. Essential fatty acids play an important role in promoting human and animal health, in prevention of diseases and in healing from chronic diseases.
