OBJECTIVE: Our present study aimed to evaluate the effects of Wnt11 overexpression on the adipose-derived stem (ADSCs) cells differentiation to the nucleus pulposus (NP) cells and its function in the ADSCs cells growth, proliferation and induction of the NP cells markers.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cell growth was detected using the (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) (MTT) assay and the cell cycle was assessed by the flow cytometry. The cells morphology was evaluated using the transmission electron microscopy. The transfection efficiencies of Wnt11 lentivirus were observed under fluorescence microscope. Besides, Quantitative Real-time PCR and Western blot analysis were applied to detect the relative mRNA and protein levels.RESULTS: Wnt11 lentivirus treatment could inhibit the ADSCs cells growth and arrest the cell cycle progression at the G0/G1 phase. Besides, the overexpression of Wnt11in ADSCs cells could induce the expression of the NP cells markers. Levels of SOX-9, aggrecan, and collagen type II were significantly increased in the ADSCs cells transfected with the Wnt11 lentivirus, in comparison with the untreated cells or the vector controls.CONCLUSIONS: The Wnt11 overexpression may provide some experimental evidence for the possible opportunity of the Wnt11 to promote the ADSCs cells differentiating to the NP cells. Therefore, the Wnt11 overexpression may have a potential utility for the treatment of the intervertebral disc degeneration.

This study aimed to identify and analyze the characteristics of highly cited biomass articles in the Science Citation Index Expanded that were published between 1900 and 2013. Articles with at least 100 citations from the Web of Science Core Collection were selected, and the following characteristics were recorded: publication year, authors, institutions, countries/territories, journals, Web of Science categories, and citation life cycles. The results show that 3407 highly cited articles were published between 1966 and 2011, and the most highly cited biomass articles were published in Ecology. The USA produced 49% of all highly cited articles and contributed the most single, internationally collaborative, first-author, single-author, and corresponding-author articles. All of the top 13 most productive institutions were located in the USA. In addition, the Y-index was successfully applied to evaluate the publication characteristics of authors. Authors publication intensities for highly cited articles in biomass research and their publication characteristics were analyzed. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

A novel bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10 derivative bearing two π-extended pyridyl groups was synthesized, and its host-guest complexation with a paraquat derivative to form a threaded [2]pseudorotaxane was studied. Subsequently, a poly[2]pseudorotaxane was constructed with a metallosupramolecular polymer backbone via metal coordination, which was comprehensively confirmed by the combination of 1H NMR, 31P{1H} NMR, DOSY NMR, DLS, and EDX techniques. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The objective of the study was to investigate the antioxidant effect of Chinese medicine Coriolus versicolor polysaccharide on brain tissue and its mechanism in rats. SOD, MDA and GSH-Px levels in rat brain tissues were determined with SD rats as the animal model. The results showed that Coriolus versicolor polysaccharide can reduce the lipid peroxidation level in brain tissues during exhaustive exercise in rats, and can accelerate the removal of free radicals. The study concluded that its antioxidant effect is relatively apparent.

Structure and properties of complexes (energies and charge transfer) of complexes BrF-HX (X = F, Cl, Br, I) have been investigated at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ (aug-cc-pVDZ-pp basis sets for I) level. Two types of geometries (hydrogen-bonded and halogen-bonded) are observed. The calculated interaction energies show that the halogen bonded structures are more stable than the corresponding hydrogen-bonded structures. To study the nature of the intermolecular interactions, symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) energy decomposition analysis reveals that the BrF-HX complexes are dominantly electrostatic in nature. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Facial expression recognition is an interesting and challenging subject. Considering the nonlinear manifold structure of facial images, a new kernel-based manifold learning method, called kernel discriminant isometric mapping (KDIsomap), is proposed. KDIsomap aims to nonlinearly extract the discriminant information by maximizing the interclass scatter while minimizing the intraclass scatter in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. KDIsomap is used to perform nonlinear dimensionality reduction on the extracted local binary patterns (LBP) facial features, and produce low-dimensional discrimimant embedded data representations with striking performance improvement on facial expression recognition tasks. The nearest neighbor classifier with the Euclidean metric is used for facial expression classification. Facial expression recognition experiments are performed on two popular facial expression databases, i.e., the JAFFE database and the Cohn-Kanade database. Experimental results indicate that KDIsomap obtains the best accuracy of 81.59% on the JAFFE database, and 94.88% on the Cohn-Kanade database. KDIsomap outperforms the other used methods such as principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), kernel linear discriminant analysis (KLDA) as well as kernel isometric mapping (KIsomap). © 2011 by the authors.

A self-supported Co3O4/NiO core/shell nanowire array is prepared by the combination of hydrothermal synthesis and electro-deposition methods. The Co3O4/NiO core/shell nanowire array shows a combined structure of mesoporous nanowire core and branch nanoflakes shell as well as hierarchically porous structure. The electro-oxidation properties of methanol of the Co3O4/NiO core/shell nanowire array are elucidated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry tests. Impressively, the Co3O4/NiO core/shell nanowire array exhibits much higher electro-catalytic activity, lower over-potential and much more stability for methanol electro-oxidation compared to the single Co3O 4 nanowire array in alkaline medium. The enhancement of the electro-catalytic reactivity is due to the synergistic effect and unique porous core/shell nanowire architecture, which provides fast ion/electron transfer, sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte, leading to faster kinetics, lower over-potential and higher electro-catalytic reactivity. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. This paper proposes an adaptive neural network control method for a class of perturbed strict-feedback nonlinear systems with unknown time delays. Radial basis function neural networks are used to approximate unknown intermediate control signals. By constructing appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals, the unknown time delay terms have been compensated. Dynamic surface control technique is used to overcome the problem of "explosion of complexity" in backstepping design procedure. In addition, the semiglobal uniform ultimate boundedness of all the signals in the closed-loop system is proved. A main advantage of the proposed controller is that both problems of "curse of dimensionality" and "explosion of complexity" are avoided simultaneously. Finally, simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach. © 2012 Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
