Steel structure with its comprehensive advantages have been extensively used in many fields in China and abroad. Under the action of crane load, vehicle load, wind load, wave load and other random cycle loads, steel fatigue damages most likely occured in industrial building, road bridges, railway bridges, high-rise buildings and marine oil platforms etc. Due to the brittle character and the resulted heavy loss from fatigue failure, the fatigue damage has always been an issue for steel structures among academic researchers and engineers in practice all over the world. Based on a briefly review of the research history of fatigue of steel structures, the research progress of the past 30 years in China is emphatically summarized, which mainly involves following six aspects: fatigue load spectrum, fatigue influence factors, fatigue failure mechanism, fatigue testing methods, fatigue life estimation and fatigue design methods. At the same time, this paper points out research directions for the fatigue research of steel structure in the future and the issues that require to be solved urgently.
