Assessments of the safety and irradiation dose to the populace and biota due to atmospheric emissions at the Priargunsky Mining and Chemical Works are presented. It is shown that under regular operating conditions the emissions of radioactive substances do not exceed the hygienic norms and ecological criteria established for the radiological safety of the populace and environment. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

A methodology for determining the effect of radiation on the environment and methods for estimating the irradiation dose and environmental risk to objects of the biota are presented. An example of using this methodology for the cooling reservoir at the Leningradskaya NPP is given. The irradiation dose rate calculated for representative objects of the biota in the cooling reservoir of the Leningradskaya NPP using data from monitoring is 5.8·10 -9-2.2·10-8 Gy/h and the environmental risk for biota does not exceed 3·10-3. Thus, under regular operating conditions the emissions and discharges of radioactive substances from NPP satisfy the criterion for preserving a favorable environment. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
