In order to investigate the reasons for low strength of wet base-sheet of paper-making process reconstituted tobacco in drying process, the thermogravimetric properties of wet state wood pulp, tobacco stem, scraps, tobacco dust and base-sheet were analyzed by Thermogravimetry Analysis (TGA) and Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMA). The results showed that: 1) According to TGA, the order of dehydration rate were wet tobacco stem>wet wood pulp>wet tobacco dust>wet scraps>wet base-sheet; 2) According to DMA, the peak values of storage modulus and loss modulus of wet wood pulp sheet were far higher than those of the other materials at the heating rate of 5°C/min, which indicated that the addition of wood pulp could improve the inner combining power and mechanical property of base-sheet of reconstituted tobacco. The disadvantages of high consistency refining which is commonly used in reconstituted tobacco sheets manufacture was analyzed and two steps low consistency refining process was described. The high and low refining effect on the fibers characteristics and the sheet properties were compared. The results showed that low consistency refining can the disadvantages of high consistency refining. Compare to high consistency refining, low consistency refining improves the fiber length by 10.8%, the width of fiber drops by 17.8%, coarseness reduces by 9.5%, kinked fibers, broken fibers and softness are also lower than that of high consistency refining. Soxhlet extraction method was used to determinate the content of pitch and stickies in the paper-making reconstituted tobacco slurry. The results showed that the appropriate extraction conditions were as follows: extraction solvent was methylene chloride, extraction temperature was 60°C, extraction time was 3 h. The content of pitch and stikies varied with the slurry flow direction, there were two significant decreases, two non significant decreases and a sudden increase of the content of pitch and stikies in the process. The main reason for significant decreases was the addition of wood slurry and dewatering of the former respectively, and the sudden increase was mainly due to the recycling of white water. The recycling of white water seriously influenced the content of pitch and stickies in the slurry. Source
