Meningiomas are the most prevalent intracranial tumors in human being. Although, majority of these cases are of benign nature, malignant behavior might be seen in a number of patients. This study aimed to investigate the status of estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and Ki-67 labeling index in different grades of surgical intracranial meningiomas. In this prospective study, 50 patients with intracranial meningiomas were operated at the department of neurosurgery, Tabriz Teaching Imam Reza Hospital; from February 2010 through January 2012. Tumor grade was determined histopathologically according to the World Health Organization (WHO) subtyping system. Status of estrogen and progesterone receptor, as well as the Ki-67 labeling index was determined by immunohistochemical approach and graded as 0 (absent), 1 (weak), 2 (moderate) and 3 (strong). The group of patients comprised 15 males (30%) and 35 females (70%) with a mean age of 71.76±10.20 (range: 49-87) years. WHO grades I, II and III tumors were reported in 68, 22 and 10% of the cases, respectively. Estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and Ki-67 labeling index were detected in 20% (all grade 1), 98% (grade 1: 2%, grade 2: 22%, grade 3: 74%) and 38% (grade 1: 6%, grade 2: 22% and grade 3: 10%) of the cases, respectively. The rate of grade 1 estrogen receptor was significantly higher in WHO grade I tumors (29%) than in WHO grades II and III (zero for both, p = 0.02). Grade 2 progesterone receptor was significantly higher in WHO grade II tumors (72.7%) vs. WHO grades I (8.8%) or III (0%). On the other hand, the rate of grade 3 progesterone receptor was significantly higher in WHO grades I (85.3%) and III (100%) tumors than in WHO grade II (27.3%) (p = 0.01). The rate of grade 3 Ki-67 labeling index was significantly higher in WHO grade III tumors (100%) than in WHO grades I and II (zero for both, p<0.001). This study showed that firstly, estrogen receptor is seldom expressed in patients with meningioma; however, its presence means a good prognosis. Secondly, Ki-67 labeling index is a marker of poor prognosis in these patients. Thirdly, although, progesterone receptors are frequently expressed in meningioma, their prognostic role varies greatly and needs to be determined in further studies. © 2012 Asian Network for Scientific Information. Varicocele is classified as grade I-III regarding its severity. This study was aimed to determine the correlation between height and weight with varicocele grade in 18-30 years age group. We enrolled 400 persons aged 18-30 years referred to the specialist's clinics of Tabriz Medical Sciences University or Medical Commission Since Sep. 2004 to Mar. 2005. First we divided the volunteers in two groups including Varicocele Group and Non-varicocele Group, then varicocele patients were classified to three grades considering the severity of the disease: severe (Grade III), moderate (Grade II) and mild (Grade I). Finally, the correlation between height, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) was evaluated. There was a significant relation between height and grades of left-side varicocele; in other words the severity of disease was increased with height (p = 0.004). Also, height increased the prevalence of varicocele (p = 0.011). On the other hand, low weight and BMI increased the prevalence of varicocele (p = 0.000, p = 0.004) but did not affect the severity of disease (p = 0.364, p = 0.172). In conclusion, the height of patients directly affected the prevalence and severity of left-side varicocele which probably is related to length of left internal spermatic veins in these patients and increased hydrostatic pressure in taller patients. Also, the weight and BMI is effective on the prevalence of varicocele. It seems that slim and tall persons will benefit from evaluation while puberty. © 2011 Asian Network for Scientific Information. Atrial fibrillation is associated with cerebral stroke, congestive heart insufficiency and mortality. The present study aimed at evaluating of cognitive disorders in patients with history of atrial fibrillation without cerebral stroke. In a case-control study, 100 patients with first-ever atrial fibrillation seizure without history of cerebral stroke were evaluated. One hundred healthy subjects with normal sinus rhythm matched with the patients in terms of age and gender were regarded as the control group. The case and control groups were followed up for at least one year after occurring of atrial fibrillation. Cognitive disorders were evaluated at the last visit. The case group was consisted of 51 men and 42 women with mean age of 71.08±5.35 years and there were 53 men and 43 women with mean age of 71.34±5.04 years in the control group. Previous history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, smoking, consuming of alcohol and warfarin in the case group were 49.5, 23.7, 18.3, 31.2, 14, 7.5 and 9.7% and in the control group 6.4, 35.4, 24, 36.5, 21.9, 13.5 and 12.5%, respectively. In this regard, there was not statistically meaningful difference between these two groups. Dementia was detected in 3 (3.2%) of the case and 1 (1%) of the control group subjects (p = 0.29). Comparing two groups with and without dementia demonstrated that there was not any meaningful risk factor. According to the results, dementia in patients with positive history of atrial fibrillation was more than normal population. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific Infomation. Source

Mucositis is a toxic side effect of anti-cancer treatments and is a major focus in cancer research. Pro-inflammatory cytokines have previously been implicated in the pathophysiology of chemotherapy-induced mucositis. The aim of this study was to detect a correlation between serum cytokine levels in head and neck (H and N) cancer patients receiving combined chemo-radiation therapy. Thirty patients with H and N epithelial cancer were recruited to this study. All patients received radiotherapy to the H and N region with doses ranging from 50-70 Gray (Gy). Chemotherapy with cisplatin, carboplatin, 5-fluorouracil and taxanes was given to high-risk patients, using standard chemotherapy protocols. Patients were evaluated for mucositis according to WHO common toxicity criteria and blood samples were drawn for inflammatory (IL-1 and TNF-a) and before and during treatment. The mucositis evaluation demonstrated mucositis grade IV in 33.3% of the patients after the 3rd treatment week. At the end of treatment, the number of patients with grade IV mucositis was less. IL-1 and TNF-α did not show any correlation with PEG tube installation. The level of cytokines measured before and during therapy showed decreased TNF-α especially after the third week of therapy. No relationship between IL-1 and TNF-α, level and mucositis grade was shown. © 2012 Asian Network for Scientific Information. Source

Vesicoureteral reflux is a major problem in childhood affecting 1% of all children. There are various surgical methods for vesicoureteral reflux treatment. Current study evaluates effectiveness and success rate of the Lich-gregoir procedure in treatment of the vesicoureteral reflux. In a descriptive-analytical study, 32 children with 47 reflux unit underwent Lich-gregoir anti-reflux procedure in Imam Reza and Amir-al-Momenin Hospitals, Tabriz between March 2008 and August 2011. Surgery outcome and success rate, sonographic findings and complications rate were recorded in follow-up. Patients mean age was 5.85±3.81 years. 28.1% were male and 71.9% were female. Reflux was unilateral in 53.1% and bilateral in 46.9%. Vesicoureteral reflux grade I to V was in one, 1, 13, 22 and ten patients, respectively. Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG) findings were abnormal in all cases before operation. Surgery success rate in first 6 months was 95.7% and was 100% in 8 months after operation. Hydronephrosis disappeared after operation in all cases. Complication occurred in 2 cases (6.25%) with bilateral reflux including urinary intention and lymphocele. Lich-gregoir anti-reflux procedure technique is accompanied with higher success rate, low complication and hydronephrosis improvement and is an appropriate treatment for vesicoureteral reflux in children. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific Information.
