Cheap shale gas might solve most of Polish dilemmas of energy sector such as ecological, energy security and competitiveness of the economy issues. The fiasco of shale gas project means that further discussion of the optimal electricity output structure boils down to the proportion of domestic coal and imported natural gas used in power generation. There is now a clear oversupply of natural gas on world markets. The text argues that this does not necessarily translate directly to big declines in gas prices. The problem is that current and forecasted natural gas prices are not cost-effective in comparison with cheap and easily accessible coal. This signals the pessimistic prospects for the growth potential of the Polish gas market. Only with high prices for CO2, gas combustion for electricity generation becomes competitive in relation to coal what can create a wider market for gas.

Taking into account both American and European natural gas prices and LNG transportation costs, US shale gas could be competitive on European market. Nevertheless, supply of US gas for export to Europe, according to latest forecasts, will be relatively small in next 10-15 years. Therefore, impact of American shale gas on European gas market will be limited. It is likely, that Polish shale gas exploitation will turn to be not profitable. In these circumstances shale gas will exert only moderate influence on diversification of gas supplies to Poland in the near future.

Introduction:Breast cancer (BC) treatment results depend greatly on prompt and efficient diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. This means that the final treatment outcome is determined by the amount of time elapsed from disease onset to treatment implementation. Delays in implementation may be due to patients, physicians or the healthcare system. The aim of this research project was to identify healthcare system-related causes of delayed diagnosis and treatment of BC in Polish women. In our previous study, we presented causes related to patient attitudes. In this paper causes related to the healthcare system are discussed. © Polskie Towarzystwo Onkologiczne.

Background: The aim of this work was to elaborate the Factors Enhancing Teachers' Occupational Wellbeing Scale for use with teachers from health promoting schools and to provide its psychometric analysis. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 270 teachers from the health promoting schools. The instrument consisted of 45 statements divided into five subscales (working conditions, teachers' community, students and parents' community, organization and workload, professional competences), which are measured from two points of view: assessment of a current situation (a 5-point rating scale from 5 (strongly yes) to 1 (strongly no)) and assessment of needs for the improvement (a 5-point rating scale from 1 (no need) do 5 (very strong need)). Psychometric analysis included the assessment of: reliability (using Cronbach-α coefficient), theoretical validity (factor analysis with principal axis extraction) and construct validity (using data concerning self-assessment of general occupational being and assessment of general occupational being of other teachers at school, two hypothesis were tested) and unidimensionality (principal component analysis). Results: Cronbach's α for subscales, assessment of a current situation: 0.75-0.86, and for subscales assessment of needs for the improvement: 0.80-0.93. Factor structure of the scale was convergent with the expected one. Construct validity of the subscales was satisfactory - all hypotheses were confirmed. All subscales were also unidimensional. Conclusions: Psychometric analysis of the scale gave satisfactory results concerning its quality. The scale can be used as a tool in staff's health promotion, especially in the health promoting schools. © Instytut Medycyny Pracy im. prof. J. Nofera w Łodzi.

Background: The aim of this article is to present the results of survey on general occupational being and factors contributing to the enhancement of teachers' occupational wellbeing. The authors also address the issue how to work out, analyze, present and use the survey results in health promotion at schools. Material and Methods: Teachers of four selected health promoting schools (HPS) were surveyed and the results were analyzed. The Factors Enhancing Teachers's Occupational Wellbeing Scale was used. This instrument consisted of 45 statements on 5 subscales (working conditions, teachers' community, students' and parents' community, organization and workload, professional competences). They were measured from two points of view, the assessment of a current situation and the assessment of needs for the improvement. The scale was preceded by questions concerning the assessment of general occupational being and the assessment of general occupational being of other teachers at school. Results: The self-assessment of the respondents' own and other teachers' occupational being was positive. The current situation related to factors influencing teachers' wellbeing was recognized by teachers as rather good and the need for change was rather low. There were differences between schools in the majority of analyzed factors. An easy method of analyzing data as numerical values and graphic profiles was proposed to be used in HPS. Conclusions: Factors influencing teachers' occupational wellbeing differed between schools. The results of their assessment should be analyzed in each school taking account of its individual context. The proposed instrument and method of data analysis are useful in the planning of teachers' health promotion projects, diagnosis of the initial status ("pre-test") and evaluation of their outcomes ("post-test"). © Instytut Medycyny Pracy im. prof. In this paper we present a novel method for integration the prediction results by finding common latent components via independent component analysis. The latent components can have constructive or destructive influence on particular prediction results. After the elimination of the deconstructive signals we rebuilt the improved predictions. We check the method validity on the electricity load prediction task.

We examine two approaches to the problem of measuring the voting power of individuals in a voting body with an a priori coalition structure by means of the Shapley-Shubik index. In order to analyze this question we apply games with a priori unions and composite games. We compare these two approaches basing on voting games with 100 voters and different coalition structures and present our conclusions.

In this study we assessed homocysteine level in 106 patients with ET - 80 females and 26 males, mean age 54 (23-82) and in 20 healthy persons - 6 males and 14 females, mean age 41 (31-54). We also searched for a relation between homocysteine level and MTHFR gene mutation as well as vitamin B12 and folic acid concentration. Median homocysteine serum level was higher in ET patients than in control group. Elevated homocysteine level primarily stems from folic acid deficiency rather than from the presence of MTHFR gene mutation. Median folic acid level was lower in ET patients presenting thrombotic and bleeding complications than in ET patient without vascular episodes. We concluded that folic acid substitution may not only prevent hyperhomocysteinemia but also the development of vascular complications in ET patients. © 2013 Polskie Towarzystwo Hematologów i Transfuzjologów, Instytut Hematologii i Transfuzjologii.
