A method to estimate the characteristic impedance and wave numbers of limp and rigid porous materials based on in situ measurements with a Particle Velocity (PU) probe is proposed in this paper. First, two appropriate sample boundary conditions were determined. Then with two in situ measurements of the surface impedance of the porous material, the characteristic impedance and wave number of the material could be estimated. The method was validated with a pair of samples. The surface impedance calculated with the estimated characteristic parameters agrees well with the measured surface impedance. The results show that the method is of practical use in the application of porous materials to noise control. © W. S. Maney & Son Ltd 2015. Source
