The attempts to justify Kirchhoff integral formula as some a kind of "rigorous" solution to diffraction scalar problems was an interesting field of research in the Scalar Theory of Diffraction. This paper describes a curious agreement (aside from an additive constant and a scaling factor) between Kirchhoff limiting values and the rigorous solution to the half plane problem given by Sommerfeld. © 2013 Elsevier GmbH.

In the celebrated Sommerfeld's rigorous solution to the half-plane problem, a condition fully demonstrated states that the edge neither radiates nor absorb energy. So, the well known Grimaldi's phenomenon, the shining of the edge, is claimed as an "optical illusion" (literally optische Täuschung) in his original paper. This paper deals with an apparent contradiction about this matter showing experimentally that the edge acts as a real source. © 2011 Elsevier GmbH.

This paper revisits a well-known hydrostatic paradox, observed when turning upside down a glass partially filled with water and covered with a sheet of light material. The phenomenon is studied in its most general form by including the mass of the cover. In a diffracted wavefield occurs in patterns phase variations. The most familiar example is the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern through a single slit: the theory predicts that the side bands of the diffraction pattern alternate in phase. This paper deals with phase reversal phenomenon in diffraction patterns. This short historical note deals with the phenomenological aspect of diffraction patterns in obstacles having central or axial symmetry. In the special case of the circular symmetry the light spot at the centre of the shadow is called "Poisson's spot" and it is often quoted as a crucial moment in the development of the theories about light. In this paper the phenomenon is seen only as a typical case of poor knowledge of the scientific Literature and of an unattentive observation of the men involved. © 2012 Elsevier GmbH.

Kirchhoff diffraction formula of the scalar theory of diffraction can be expressed as a line integral over the boundary of an aperture in a plane absorbing screen. This analytical transformation was demonstrated only for a spherical wave impinging through the aperture. It was surprising to find the extension to a plane wave firstly claimed by Rubinowicz (see Ref. [4]) was given without any proof. The form of this transformation does not follow as a simple limiting case. This paper shows a direct proof of this extension. © 2012 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
