Ethylene is a natural hormone that is synthetized inside the cells and released as gas. It plays an important role in the regulation of several physiological processes, such as leaf senescence, organ abscission and fruit ripening. In addition, its occurrence is related to the plant/fruit response to stress caused by pathogens, droughts and mechanical damages. Due to its importance, ethylene has been widely used in agriculture and its handling is a very efficient technique to reduce or accelerate fruit ripening. This study aimed at evaluating the respiratory behaviour and the post-harvest quality of oranges (cultivars Folha Murcha, Pera and Valência) upon the application of 1-MCP and refrigeration, during 60 days of storage. The fruits were submitted to an application of three doses of 1-methylcyclopropene (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 μL.L-1) during 12 h and, after this period, they were stored in cold chambers at 7, 14 and 21°C for 60 days. Every 15 days, we carried out analyses of ethylene production, respiratory rate, epidermis coloration, SS, TS, and total carotenoids. The data collected were submitted to analysis of variance (test F) and the averages were studied through regression (p ≤0.05). The highest doses of 1-MCP caused chemical stress to the oranges and were responsible for the increase in ethylene and respiratory rates; the application of 1-MCP did not cause significant alterations in the chemical characteristics, such as SS, TA, ratio and carotenoids; the colour change in the epidermis was retarded by the application of 1-MCP.
