A new type of electro-optic (EO) polymer is prepared in this work. The main chain of the EO polymer is made of polyphosphazenes, and the side chain consists of carbazole based nitro azobenzene. The principle and method of preparation are given and the characteristics of this material are studied in details. The polymer with an EO coefficient of 35 pm/V has fine stability and can be easily processed. It also shows photoconductivity due to the carbazole group. This polymer thin film is obtained through performance improvement. Terahertz (THz) wave can be detected using the device, which is made of the new polymer. Owing to its fascinating properties, this new type of EO polymer has the potential to be widely applied in photorefractive materials as well as for emission and detection of THz radiation. © 2014 Elsevier BV. We present the design and characterization of a three-dimension metamaterial consisted of a Jerusalem cross unit cell on the each side of cube lattice substrate for terahertz frequencies. The retrieved effective medium parameters from scattering data prove that the three-dimension metamaterial has a negative permeability and permittivity in wide frequencies range of 1.47-1.73 THz. We demonstrate that the three-dimension can be regarded as a polarization insensitive absorber with an absorptivity of 46% at 1.49 THz. Such designed materials may find numerous applications ranging from the active element in a thermal detector to terahertz stealth technology. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland. Source

Polyphosphazenes containing carbazole grafted by azo nitrobenzene is synthesized by microwave method in this paper. Its structure is characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy. This new polymer, with both electro-optic(EO) property and photoconductive property, has unique stability and can be easily processed. Terahertz(THz) wave can be detected using the device which is made with our new polymer. In the terahertz (THz) science research field, electro-optic (EO) polymer possesses many superior characters compared with mineral crystal. Two kinds of the side group EO polymer, polyphosphazene with plmaol grained by 2, 4-dinitroaniline and polyphenylacrylate containing p-nitro bisazo group, are synthesized and characterized. For higher EO coefficient, the double EO molecules polymer thin films are prepared by mixing a small nonlinear optical (NLO) molecule into the side group EO polymer. The principles of preparation are given and the EO coefficients are tested. The effect on the EO coefficients by different mixing proportion and different poling temperature are analyzed in details. Experiments results show that the double EO molecules polymer has fine stability, higher EO coefficient and can be easily processed. This kind of material has the potential to be widely applied in the emission and detection of THz radiation. © 2014 SERSC. Source
