The Romelt process for the liquid-phase reduction of iron is one of the most important Russian innovations in the production of iron outside the blast furnace. This technology is especially important for use in the recycling of iron-bearing wastes from metallurgical operations, and conversion pig iron is a by-product of this application. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

The processing of concentrate obtained by enriching recycled slags from copper production is studied on experimental prototype that was built at the AB Metalls plant in Balkhash and uses the Romelt process for the liquid-phase reduction of iron. The study results were used to develop a new technology that employs coal to process copper-bearing sulfide-based raw materials with a low sulfur content. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
