The main requirement of compression system in multimedia applications with large image size (more than or equal to 512×512 pixels) is high compression ratio with acceptable visual quality. Fractal image coding is one of the alternatives for high compression rate but due to exhaustive encoding time, it has limited practical applications. In this paper, wavelet transform based fast fractal image coding is proposed. FFT based fractal image coding with variable quadtree partition is applied to the approximation subband and three detail subbands of the wavelet transformed image. Quadtree partitioned wavelet subtree is constructed after wavelet decomposition of fractal decoded approximation subband image. The self similarities existing in wavelet subtree are exploited by predicting the coefficients at finer scale from those at coarser scale using affine transformation. The proposed method improves the visual quality of the decoded image at very low bit rate and achieves average 92% reduction of coding time compared to the pure fast fractal image coding. Results also show that the JPEG based compressed image PSNR value reduced by 4-5 dB when the compression ratio around 60.1-70.1. © 2014 IEEE.

A simple method for converting binary number to any other m-nary (m = 2k, k is an integer > 1) number is outlined. Reverse conversion from the m-nary to the original binary number which is extremely simple is also outlined. Finally, forward and reverse conversions allow converting the numbers from radix rK to radix rk, K and k are integers. These conversions are also applicable to signed numbers. The method is illustrated with several examples. Architectures for converting binary number to quaternary number which can easily be extended to higher order radices is proposed. With the help of this architecture, the method is experimentally verified. © 2014 IEEE.

Use of Ultra-wideband (UWB) for wireless communication in home networking requires cost effective technical solutions with high quality. This paper investigates the performance of simple receiver with zero forcing equalizer in place of rake receiver for hermite based UWB communication. The UWB system with simple receiver is simulated for the application of image transmission over IEEE UWB channels CM1-CM4 modeled for indoor communication. Image to be transmitted is compressed by using JPEG lossless compression. The Double error correcting block code has been used to improve the BER performance of the system. The received image quality is tested using PSNR and its Structural Similarity and Image Quality (SSIM) index.

Three different configurations have been reported for programming explicitly inverting, positive fractional and non-inverting gains, respectively. This paper proposes a single operational amplifier digitally programmable circuit for a set of arbitrary gains, which may include inverting, positive fractional and/or non-inverting gains, with minimum number of elements. The design procedure is illustrated with an example.
