Thorium pnictides crystallise in Fm3̄m space group at ambient condition and transform to Pm3̄m space group under pressure. We have investigated the phase transition, elastic and thermophysical properties of thorium pnictides by means of a modified charge-transfer potential model. This model incorporates Coulomb effect modified by Coulomb screening effect due to the delocalisation of the electron of Th-ion (charge-transfer) and covalency along with repulsion extended up to next-nearest neighbours. Present model is capable of explaining the Cauchy's discrepancy correctly. The calculated values of the phase-transition pressure (PT = 70.6, 29.6, 24.3 and 11.5 GPa) and relative volume collapse (6.37, 11.22, 9.92 and 9.27%) for ThN, ThP, ThAs and ThSb, respectively, are in good agreement with the experimental data. The equation of state has been plotted to obtain phase diagram. © 2010 Taylor & Francis.

A series of 16 new complexes of lanthanide(III) iodide, with the Schiff base ligands, 2-methyl-4-NN-bis-2'- cyanoethylaminobenzylidineaniline [MCEABAB], 2-methyl-4-NN-bis-2'-cyanoethylaminobenzylidine p-chloro aniline [MCEABCAB], 2-methyl-4-NNbis- 2'-cyanoethylaminobenzylidine p-toludine [MCEABPT] and 2-methyl-4-NN-bis-2'-cyanoethylamino-benzylidine p-fluoroaniline [MCEABFAB] were synthesized. The complexes were characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, molecular weight determinations, conductivity measurements, IR spectra and electronic spectra. Mass spectra and TGA studies for the formation of complexes with general formula [Ln(L)4I2]I, [where Ln = La, Ce, Sm and Gd; L = MCEABAB, MCEABCAB, MCEABPT and MCEABFAB] were analyzed. Some of the synthesized complexes were tested for biological activity against a variety of test organisms, a few of them were found to be moderately effective.

Bis(parahydroxyacetophenonebenzyldithiocarbazate) zinc(II) and bis (acetophenonebenzyldithiocarbazate) zinc(II) complexes have been synthesized. Zinc sulphide nanostructures were obtained from both complexes at different deposition temperatures using microwave assisted chemical route. The surface morphology of as-prepared ZnS nanoparticles were obtained using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Particles with spherical shape are shown in the TEM images of these samples. The optical properties of the particles studied by UV–Vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy showed evidence of quantum confinement. © Springer India 2015.

Samarium chalcogenides crystallize in Fm3m space group at ambient condition and transform to Pm3m space group under high pressure. We have investigated the structural and elastic properties of Samarium chalcogenides using modified charge-transfer potential model. This model incorporates long-range Coulomb effects and charge-transfer (Coulomb screening due to f-electrons of Sm) effect modified by covalency and short-range repulsive interaction extended up to next-nearest neighbours. This model is capable of explaining the Cauchy-discrepancy. We have computed elastic constants, Poisson's ratio and its volume derivative, the ratio of volume thermal expansion coefficient to specific heat, Debye temperature and Grüneisen parameter. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.
