Traditional indefinite chill double pour(ICDP) material was used as work roll on heavy plate mill at present. For the improving production efficiency of steel plant, the requirement on the performance of the work roll was higher and higher. Through adjusting the composition of alloy, the improved ICDP work rolls for plate mill were produced, of which the morphology of carbide and graphite significantly changed. The results show that wear resistance of the improved ICDP rolls increased more than 20%comparing with the traditional products.

Hot compressive experiment of a novel high speed steel for cold mill work roller was carried out on a Gleeble-3500 thermo-simulation machine. The dynamic recrystallization behavior of the steel between 900 to 1150°C and with strain rates from 0.01 to 10 s-1 was investigated. The stress-strain curves were measured and the typical microstructure were observed. Meanwhile, the Zener-Hollomon parametric equation, the thermal deformation equation, the relationship between the peak stress, peak strain and Z parameter and dynamic recrystallization diagram were established, respectively. The results show that the stress-strain curve of the high speed steel for cold mill work roller exhibits dynamic recrystallization characteristics and its thermal deformation activation energy is 541.4 kJ/mol. The peak stress, peak strain and Z parameter follow an exponential law. With the increase of Z parameter, the critical strain εp for dynamic recrystallization occurring and strain εs for complete dynamic recrystallization increase together.

The precipitation temperatures of different carbides in a new high speed steel for roller were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), while the morphology of the carboides and the phase structure of the steel were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The volume fraction of carbides was statistically analyzed by software of image-pro plus for the steel after being held for 15 min, 20 min, 25 min and 30 min at characteristic temperatures and then cooled. The results show that when the specimen is held for 25 min at 1300°C and cooled quickly, the volume fraction of MC is the largest. When it is quickly cooled at 1220°C, the volume fractions of MC and M2C are the largest after being held for 20 min. When it is quickly cooled at 1150°C, the volume fraction of MC increases continuously with increasing holding time, the volume fraction of M2C is the largest after being held for 20 min and is the smallest after being held for 25 min, while the volume fraction of M6C increases at first, then decreases and reaches the largest after being held for 20 min.

The stress field of compound cast rollers during centrifugal casting process was investigated in this work. A finite element (FE) model was built to simulate the internal stress fields during cooling process, in which phase transformation was considered. The mechanical parameters employed in stress numerical simulation were measured by using thermal/mechanical simulator. The residual internal stress of the compound cast roller by centrifugal casting method was measured by using X-ray stress analyzer. The simulated results are in agreement with the measured ones very well. According to this model, the temperature and stress fields of the compound cast roller during centrifugal casting process were simulated. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Mo2FeB2 cermets were prepared by in-situ reaction and vacuum liquid phase sintering technology which used Mo powder, Fe powder and FeB powder as raw materials. Added with the different content of Cr, Ni, the influence on microstructure and properties of the alloy were studied, and the distribution and phase of the alloy was investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD. The results show that Ni only exists in the binder of the cermets, Cr exists in both hard phase and binder and produces the particles of Mo2FeB 2 fine grain size, With 10%wt of Cr, 2%wt of Ni added, comprehensive mechanics performance of the material is best and the bending strength was highest with high hardness.

The Cr3 compound cast steel backup roller was researched as a subject. A backup roller satisfying the required properties was produced by the differential heat treatment process. The temperature distribution of the backup roller in the differential heat treatment process was studied. The hardness and microstructure of the roller's working layer were analyzed. The temperature field of the backup roller in the oil quenching process was simulated by using a developed simulation system of quenching temperature fields. The simulated results were compared with the experimental ones. It is shown that different temperatures in the core and body of the backup roller can be gained by using the differential heat treatment process, and therefore, different microstructures can be obtained in the following oil quenching process. When the backup roller is heated by the differential heat treatment process, the hardness and microstructure of the roller's working layer can meet the usage requirements. The oil quenching process of the backup roller was simulated by using the developed simulation system. The simulated and experimental results are basically consistent, indicating that the simulation system has a higher reliability. The simulation system can be used to optimize the heat treatment process and provides a quantificational reference basis for practical production.
