Replacing MgO with CaxpMg1-xO(CMO) film as new protective layer can significantly improve luminous efficacy for high Xe content PDP. Special processes are developed to prevent forming Calcium carbonate during PDP production. Good crystallinity of CMO is a key to resist surface contamination. Oxygen flux and substrate temperature are critical to film quality. FTIR is used to monitor the carbonate formation during the PDP process. Source

Developing high gamma protective layer for high Xe concentration gas discharge is one of the most important way to achieve low power consumption Plasma TV. We have developed Ca xMg 1-xO(CMO) film and related processes for high Xe content PDP. The 50 inch CMO panel shows more than 20% increase of luminous efficacy and about 10 Volts voltage reduction in minimum sustain voltage. Source

CaxMg1-xO(CMO) has a merit of generating high secondly electron emission in high Xe content which results in high luminous efficacy PDP. The easy formation of CaCO3 and MgCO3 in manufacture process is a big challenge to mass production. Both technique and cost issues associated to this technology is discussed. Source
