A long drilling circle and a low ROP are bottlenecks in drilling through deep clastic rocks in the western Sichuan Basin. In view of this, an investigation is made into the related literatures at home and abroad. On this basis, in terms of the types, composition, and performance of drilling fluids, an evaluation analysis is made of the influence degree of drilling fluid parameters including density, solid contents, rheology, and filtration, on the ROP in drilling at different intervals in this study area. And by referring to the achievements made by the Sinopec, we developed a non-clay drilling fluid system for a high ROP in drilling medium and shallow wells. And the polymer fluid systems with low density, low gel, low solid contents and strong inhibition, strong encapsulation, and strong plugging, are developed to prevent or reduce downhole problems in deep well drilling, to stabilize the wellbore, to eliminate lost circulations, and to avoid differential sticking. After application in the wells Xin 21-1H and Xin 916-1, etc., the ROP in drilling medium and shallow formations is significantly improved, the accident rates in deep drilling are largely reduced, and the drilling cycle is thus shortened as expected.
