This paper analyzed the basic conditions in Dazhou tobacco growing areas such as tobacco planting climate factors, soil nutrient status and burley tobacco leaf quality characters. Results show that: (1) Dazhou tobacco growing areas were rich in energy resources, and featured high temperature, precipitation and air humidity. Its landform type featured low hills and low mountains with purple soil, red soil, red yellow soil, alluvial soil and paddy soil being its major soil type. Thus Dazhou tobacco area proved to be suitable for the growth of tobacco. (2) Nutrients were not evenly distributed in Dazhou tobacco-growing soil. Soil in most parts showed weak acidity and had medium level of organic content. Potassium fertilizer, boron, magnesium and other trace elements supplement should be added as supplement. (3) Sensory quality of burley tobacco in Dazhou tobacco growing area was as good as its physical characters and chemical composition and its sensory quality for smoking was relatively good. ©, 2015, State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau and China Tobacco Society. Field experiments with burley tobacco and flue-cured tobacco material were set up in Dazhou tobacco growing area of Sichuan and Dali tobacco growing area of Yunnan to explore the effect of curing methods on the contents of neutral aroma substances in tobacco. Matured tobacco leaves of the same tobacco type were subjected to flue-curing and air-curing separately, and contents of neutral aroma substances were measured after curing. Results showed that contents and proportions of neutral aroma substances in cured leaves with different curing methods displayed significant difference while their components were the same. The air-curing was unfavorable for the accumulation of aroma substances and neophytadiene in flue-cured tobacco, but it could significantly increase the contents of solanone and Maillard reaction products in flue-cured tobacco. The flue-curing was unfavorable for the accumulation of solanone, linalool, geranyl, dihydroactinidiolided and famesyl aeclonr in burley tobacco, but good for the accumulation of neophytadiene, dehydrogenation, ketoisophorone, megastigmatrienone, solavetivone and aromatic amino acid degradation products. Under air-curing condition, flue-cured tobacco showed little of its due characteristics with decreased aroma quality and sweetness and enhanced irritation; under flue-curing condition, burley tobacco presented little of its burley style with improved aroma quality and sweetness and less irritation. ©, 2015, State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau and China Tobacco Society.
