Introduction This study aimed to compare and analyse the findings of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) on MRI and positron emission tomography (PET)/CT and explore the diagnostic utility of combined MRI-PET/CT in the diagnosis and preoperative staging of TSCC. Methods A prospective analysis of MRI and PET/CT data in 18 TSCC cases was performed. Cases were comprehensively staged on MRI and PET/CT preoperatively according to American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging criteria and confirmed by pathological results. Results The highest and lowest sensitivities of preoperative AJCC staging I-IV using MRI alone, PET/CT alone and combined MRI-PET/CT were 100.0%, 100.0% and 100.0% (stage II) and 50.4%, 55.6% and 55.6% (stage I), respectively. The highest specificities were 100.0%, 100.0% and 100.0% (stage II), and the highest correct rates were 100.0%, 96.5% and 100.0% (stage II). Compared with the postoperative pathological staging, preoperative staging showed no significant difference for stages I-II and IV (P > 0.05); however, stage III showed a significant difference (P < 0.05). When combined MRI-PET/CT was compared with MRI alone in the accuracy of preoperative TSCC staging, there was no significant difference for stages I-III (P > 0.05), but there was a significant difference for stage IV (P < 0.05). Conclusions Combined MRI and PET/CT could serve as an important tool for the accurate diagnosis and preoperative staging of TSCC and could improve the accuracy of preoperative TSCC staging. © 2015 The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists. Objective: To establish mouse biliary obstruction model and to study the model dynamically. Methods: Forty Balb/c mice were used and divided into experimental group (n = 32) and control group (n = 8). Mice of the experimental group were inflicted with obstructive jaundice through ligation of common bile duct. Mice were sacrificed on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th days after the ligation to measure bile duct diameter, complete blood count, liver function and to study morphological changes in the liver. Results: The levels of common bile duct diameter, MID%, ALT, AST, TBIL, DBIL, ALP and CHOL elevated in association with the time of common bile duct ligation, reached the peak on the third day after surgery, then began to decline. WBC elevated on the first day after surgery, then began to decline. LYM% declined after surgery, to the minimum on the fifth day. Liver cell necrosis increased in association with surgery time. Conclusion: The clinical manifestations of this model are similar to those of patients with biliary obstruction and the cycle time of inducing this model is short. This model might be valuable in researching the mechanism of the obstructive jaundice. Source

Objective: To elucidate the liver function recovery and the translated stem cells' location and differentiation of the hepatic fibrosis female rats induced by alcohol in the group of translated expanded and fresh isolated c-Kit + Lin- cells. Methods: We used alcohol to establish the female rats hepatic fibrosis model. After the modeling randomly selected eight mice (model group) compared with normal mice (control group) liver function. The remaining mice were randomly selected 32 divided into 4 groups. Randomly selected eight normal mice (group 1) as a control group. C-kit +Lin- cells were isolated from mouse bone marrow by using a high-gradient magnetic cell sorting system (MACS), and expanded with combinations of SCF+HGF+FL+LIF+TPO+IL-3 for 7days in a liquid culture system. We translated the expanding c-kit+Lin- cells into the normal female rats and hepatic fibrosis female rats induced by alcohol. Observe the translated stem cells location and differentiation in the rats body and count the cells which expressed both gene of Sry, and compare the two group. Results: (1) After 30 days, HE and VG histological examination showed that the translated groups were less fibrosis and the control group obviously. (2) After 30 days, AST, ALT, ALB after transplantation compared with pretransplant significant difference (P < 0.05). (3) Results of hybridization of Y-chromosome determined cDNA and albumin mRNA indicated that in the translated group there existed hepatic cells which derived from stem cells in the liver. The difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Conclusion: In this experiment condition, expanding c-Kit+Lin- cell did not effect the stem cells location and differentiation. The liver function recovery in the group translated and fresh isolated c-Kit+Lin- cells, reverse the liver fibrosis and there existed hepatic cells which derived from stem cells in the liver. Source
