It is a cold box core making technology that using special gas generator to make methyl formate and air be blown into core box to realize sand core hardening, with modified sodium silicate as the adhesive. This making technology has many advantages, such as high efficiency, energy saving, low-cost, environmentally friendly, etc. Through the laboratorial research, the factory blowed a batch of sand cores and poured a batch of castings successfully, that proved the practicality, reliability and applicability of this technology. The making technology is very meaningful for improving present formidable working conditions of cold box core making technology.

The advantages and disadvantages of urethane resin phenol urethanelamine process, furan resin SO 2 process, and alkaline phenolic resin CO 2 process were summarized. The binder for sodium silicate cold box, the core making process and its current application situation of the cold box were presented. The development tendency of core making technology for sodium silicate cold box was prospected.
