The progress and current status of gas pipeline risk assessment were briefly introduced. According to many actual problems which affected the safe running of gas pipelines in the process of city gas grey cast iron pipeline transmission, the main influence factors are the minimum thickness coated, quality of iron pipe and subsidiary facilities, heavy vehicle rolling, the activity near the pipeline, safety distance and so on. And risk assessment of city gas pipeline was forward to improve the safe operation of gas pipelines. Source

Operational risks of gas pipelines depend on the possibility of accidents happening and the severeness of accident consequences, i. e., risk grades are the function of both the factors. Taking a gas pipeline made of grey cast iron for example, the consequences of pipeline accidents is quantitatively analyzed, with a scoring system developed for assessing severeness of accident consequences. The harm of gas itself, leakage of a failed pipeline and environmental situation are taken into account and estimated, and then the severeness of accident consequences is assessed according to the evaluations of the three factors.
