Chip formation and its morphology are important features of metal cutting, and they can yield much more important information on the cutting operations. Meantime, the cutting forces are the most commonly used on-line indicators to monitor the cutting process. In this research, the formation of the saw-tooth chips has been investigated in association with the fluctuation of the cutting force components under different cutting parameters in turning of Inconel 718 with (Ti, Al)N/TiN coated cutting tools under dry cutting condition. By means of the optical microscopy and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the saw-tooth chips are observed at high cutting speeds, which directly cause the cutting force components to fluctuate. Based on the frequency analysis, the segmentation frequencies of the saw-tooth chips and the fluctuation frequency of the cutting forces are very close to each other. It indicates that the formation of the saw-tooth chips is one of the important factors leading to the periodical fluctuation of the cutting force components, even though the cutting parameters all keep constant in turning of Inconel 718. © 2013 Korean Society for Precision Engineering and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In order to improve the accuracy of biopsy, an accurate FEM model is quite essential. To get the coefficients of the puncture target material which will be used in the Abaqus FEM analysis, the paper performed indentation test on gelatin phantom which is more stable than normal biological tissue. The Neo-Hookean and the improved Kelvin constitutive model were used to describe the mechanical properties of gelatin phantom demonstrated in the tests, including the hyperelastic and viscoelastic characteristics, then least squares method was used to fit the experimental data, finally the parameters of each constitutive model were achieved, which will be used to establish the material model in the further Abaqus FEM simulation. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Surface quality including residual stresses and surface roughness due to turning operations in Inconel 718 were studied as a function of cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. By means of X-ray radiation diffraction method, the influence of cutting parameters on residual stress was investigated. The results show that dry cutting of Inconel 718 resulted in predominantly tensile residual stresses at the machined surface and the surface roughness increased with the increase of cutting parameters.The effects of the cutting parameters on surface integrity are investigated while employing the range analysis. From these results it was possible to select a combination of cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut that generate favorable surface characteristics. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
