High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is widely expressed in cells of vertebrates in two forms: a nuclear "architectural" factor and a secreted inflammatory factor. During early brain development, HMGB1 displays a complex temporal and spatial distribution pattern in the central nervous system. It facilitates neurite outgrowth and cell migration critical for processes, such as forebrain development. During adulthood, HMGB1 serves to induce neuroinflammation after injury, such as lesions in the spinal cord and brain. Receptor for advanced glycation end products and Toll-like receptors signal transduction pathways mediateHMGB1-induced neuroinflammation and necrosis. Increased levels of endogenous HMGB1 have also been detected in neurodegenerative diseases. However, in Huntington's disease, HMGB1 has been reported to protect neurons through activation of apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease and 5′-flap endonuclease-1, whereas in other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis, HMGB1 serves as a risk factor for memory impairment, chronic neurodegeneration, and progression of neuroinflammation. Thus, HMGB1 plays important and double-edged roles during neural development and neurodegeneration. The HMGB1-mediated pathological mechanisms have remained largely elusive. Although much is known about the functional expression of the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in various neuronal populations in the brain and elsewhere, much less is known about their expression and functional relevance in glial cells. The expression of functional nAChRs has been reported for cultured astrocytes; however, previous work has failed to detect nAChR-mediated responses in astrocytes in acute slices. In the current study, functional α7 nAChRs on astrocytes in the CA1 region of the rat hippocampus were studied in situ using whole-cell patch-clamp recording and two-photon calcium imaging techniques in acute slices. We found that astrocytes and the chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan NG2-expressing (i.e., NG2) cells did express functional α7 nAChRs. Although the amplitudes of the responses were small, they could be enhanced by the α7-selective positive allosteric modulator PNU-120596. Under these conditions, we found that in comparing the properties of these responses between astrocytes, NG2, and interneurons, there were differences in the kinetics and increases in intracellular calcium levels. This is the first demonstration of functional α7 nAChR-mediated current responses in astrocytes in acute hippocampal slices, data which may shed light on the role of α7 nAChRs in neuroprotection. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC (outside the USA).

A consistent approach to the description on the structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and related materials are studied in terms of their underlying nets for cases in which these nets have more than two kinds of vertices. For MOFs formed from polytopic linkers, identifying both the basic net in which the linker is considered as a single node and the derived net in which branch points are identified explicitly, is recommended. The intrinsic symmetry of the crystal is that of the derived net, which may be lower than that of the basic net. The net gwg, derived from cds, is an example in which a tetragonal basic net has only a monoclinic derived net of minimal transitivity. Structures with different derived nets that may have the same symmetry can be differentiated. The basic nets with transitivity 3 2 (type iv of section 7) are particularly important in this regard. Several MOFs have been constructed using an octatopic linker with symmetrical shapes.

The pig is one of the main hosts of influenza A viruses and plays important roles in shaping the current influenza ecology. The occurrence of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic influenza virus demonstrated that pigs could independently facilitate the genesis of a pandemic influenza strain. Genetic analyses revealed that this virus was derived by reassortment between at least two parent swine influenza viruses (SIV), from the northern American triple reassortant H1N2 (TR) and European avian-like H1N1 (EA) lineages. The movement of live pigs between different continents and subsequent virus establishment are preconditions for such a reassortment event to occur. Asia, especially China, has the largest human and pig populations in the world, and seems to be the only region frequently importing pigs from other continents. Virological surveillance revealed that not only classical swine H1N1 (CS), and human-origin H3N2 viruses circulated, but all of the EA, TR and their reassortant variants were introduced into and co-circulated in pigs in this region. Understanding the long-term evolution and history of SIV in Asia would provide insights into the emergence of influenza viruses with epidemic potential in swine and humans.

This paper proposes a novel chaos-based image encryption scheme with an efficient permutation-diffusion mechanism, in which permuting the positions of image pixels incorporates with changing the gray values of image pixels to confuse the relationship between cipher-image and plain-image. In the permutation process, a generalized Arnold map is utilized to generate one chaotic orbit used to get two index order sequences for the permutation of image pixel positions; in the diffusion process, a generalized Arnold map and a generalized Bernoulli shift map are employed to yield two pseudo-random gray value sequences for a two-way diffusion of gray values. The yielded gray value sequences are not only sensitive to the control parameters and initial conditions of the considered chaotic maps, but also strongly depend on the plain-image processed, therefore the proposed scheme can resist statistical attack, differential attack, known-plaintext as well as chosen-plaintext attack. Experimental results are carried out with detailed analysis to demonstrate that the proposed image encryption scheme possesses large key space to resist brute-force attack as well. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. By taking the Delta robot as the object of study, this paper presents the methodology of the dynamic optimum design of a three translational degrees of freedom parallel robot while considering anisotropic property. Taking the acceleration, velocity, and gravity components into account, the torque and power indices are adopted as the objective functions for the dynamic optimum design. The physical meanings of the objective functions are the maximum input torque and power of the actuating joints when the moving platform translates with assigned acceleration and velocity. The transmission angles, the determinant of the direct kinematic Jacobian matrix, the ratio of the machine volume to that of the desired workspace, and the difference between the radius of the base platform and the radius of the moving platform are adopted as the constraints for the dynamic optimum design in order to make the Delta robot have a good transmission behavior between the links, keep far away from the direct kinematic singular configuration, not to be a very tall and slender configuration, achieve the desired performance without large dimension and big building cost. The examples of the dynamic optimum design of the Delta robot based on the torque and power indices are presented in the simulation while considering the requirements of the maximum acceleration and velocity of the moving platform along the respective direction parallel to the x axis, y axis and z axis are varied. A series of neutral cubic nickel(II)-imidazolate Ni8L 12X4 cages were prepared by rational choices of substituents and anions with solvothermal subcomponent self-assembly technology. Both substituents and halide anions play a critical role in the formation and stabilization of cubic cages. Changing one of the factors in the reaction will switch the final structure to a Ni14L24 rhombic dodecahedral cage. The cubic cage can transform to a large rhombic dodecahedral cage in the presence of methylamine at room temperature accompanied by a color change from purple to light yellow. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

A new luminescent entangled (srs nets with two-fold interpenetration, linked via short Cu⋯Cu distances of ca. 2.8 Å) MOF, namely, [(CuCN)3L·(guest)x]n (L = 2,6-bis((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)methyl)pyridine; x = 1 or 2), which contains microporous channels, is synthesized. This MOF material shows structural dynamics upon adsorption of various volatile organic solvent molecules, accompanied by reversible guest responsive colour changes of the fluorescence emission that are discernible by the naked eyes. The vacuated form of this material can also exhibit qualitative solvate-optical sensing behaviours toward various mixed solvents. Moreover, a quantitative real-time monitoring device is constructed that implements the determination of acetonitrile vapour pressure through optical response, which causes a drastic emission change from blue to yellow. In paritcular, the present invention provides the use of lower alkyl esters and/or salts of hydroxyalkanoic acid as biofuels and/or fuel additives.
