To evaluate the clinical value of ultrasonography detecting the poster urethrovesical angle (PUVA) in diagnosis of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). From Jan. 2006 to Dec. 2008, the PUVA in resting phase (PUVA-r) and stress phase (PUVA-s) between 84 patients with SUI and 100 healthy women were measured by color Doppler ultrasound, including 57 cases in SUI degree I, 22 cases in SUI degree II, 5 cases in SUI degree III. (1) The PUVA-r and PUVA-s were (130+/-29) degrees and (158+/-36) degrees in SUI patients, which were significantly higher (113+/-19) degrees and (115+/-23) degrees in control group (P<0.01). (2) Correlation analysis showed that PUVA-s was positively correlated with the severity of SUI (P<0.01). (3) The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) of PUVA-s was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.76-0.89) between SUI patients and healthy women. When PUVA-s>or=140 degrees was chosed as the cut-off value, the specificity, accuracy rate and positive predictive value in diagnosis of SUI were 84%, 79%, 81%, which were significantly higher than those when cut-off value of PUVA-s>or=120 degrees (54%, 68%, 62%; P<0.05). The PUVA-s in SUI patients are significantly increased and is positively correlated with the severity of SUI, which are indicated that PUVA-s>or=140 degrees should be used as cut-off value in diagnosis of SUI by ultrasonography. Human-induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells share the same key properties as embryonic stem cells, and may be generated from patient-or disease-specific sources, which makes them attractive for personalized medicine, drug screens, or cellular therapy. Long-term cultivation and maintenance of normal iPS cells in an undifferentiated self-renewing state is a major challenge. Our previous studies have shown that human amniotic epithelial cells (HuAECs) could provide a good source of feeder cells for mouse and human embryonic stem cells, or spermatogonial stem cells, as they express endogenous leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) at high levels. Here, we examined the effect of exogenous microRNA-199a regulation on endogenous LIF expression in HuAECs, and in turn on human iPS cell pluripotency. We found that HuAECs feeder cells transfected with microRNA-199a mutant expressed LIF at high levels, allowing iPS to maintain a high level of alkaline phosphatase activity in long-term culture and form teratomas in severe combined immunodeficient mice. The expression of stem cell markers was increased in iPS cultured on HuAECs feeder cells transfected with the microRNA-199a mutant, compared with iPS cultured on HuAECs transfected with microRNA-199a or mouse embryo fibroblasts. Taken together, these results suggested that LIF expression might be regulated by microRNA-199a, and LIF was a crucial component in feeder cells, and also was required for maintenance of human iPS cells in an undifferentiated, proliferative state capable of self-renewal. © 2012 The Author. Objective: To observe the effects of carboprost on third stage of labor and postpartum hemorrhage in induced labor with scarred uterus. Methods: One hundred women undergoing induced labor with scarred uterus were randomly divided into carboprost group and oxytocin group, with 50 women in each group. All women were orally administered 50 mg mifepristone twice a day for 2 d, and received injection of 100 mg acetamiprid in amniotic cavity on the third day. Women in carboprost group were orally administered 2 mg carboprost immediately after delivery, and those in oxytocin group received intrauterine injection of 20 IU oxytocin immediately after delivery. The duration of third stage of labor, volumes of postpartum hemorrhage (2 h and 24 h after delivery), rate of placenta residue, blood pressure (before delivery and 30 min, 1 h, 2 h and 24 h after delivery), pulse (before delivery and 30 min, 1 h, 2 h and 24 h after delivery) and occurrence of adverse effects were compared between two groups. Results: The duration of third stage of labor and volumes of hemorrhage 2 h and 24 h after delivery in carboprost group were significantly lower than those in oxytocin group (P < 0. 05), and the rate of placenta residue in carboprost group was significantly lower than that in oxytocin group (10% is 26%, P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the blood pressure and pulse at different time points between two groups (P > 0.05). The prevalence of adverse effects in carboprost group was significantly higher than that in oxytocin group (34% vs 18%, P < 0. 05). Conclusion: Application of carboprost in induced labor with scarred uterus may reduce volume of postpartum hemorrhage, shorten duration of third stage of labor, and decrease rate of placenta residue. Background: The postoperative scaring, ostial stenosis, and adhesions after functional endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis remains a major problem. This study was designed to evaluate two new hyaluronan (HA) hydrogels for neo-ostium antistenosis and promoting wound healing in a rabbit maxillary sinus model. Methods: The anterior wall of the maxillary sinus of 48 rabbits was removed to create a 4-mm circumferential wound both on the nasal and on the sinus sides. A rapid-gelling HA hydrogel or preformed HA hydrogel was filled randomly into the right or left sinus, while the opposite sinus served as blank control or was treated with Merogel (Medtronic Xomed Surgical Products, Jacksonville, FL) as control. The neo-ostium diameter and histological scores were evaluated and analyzed postoperatively. Results: The neo-ostium diameter in the rapid-gelling HA hydrogel-treated side was significantly larger than that in the blank control side with a mean difference of 1.46 ± 0.99 mm (p = 0.03), 1.30 ± 0.61 mm (p = 0.0087), and 1.60 ± 0.25 mm (p = 0.00015) at 2, 3, and 4 weeks, respectively; the neo-ostium diameter in the preformed HA hydrogel-treated side at 2 weeks was significantly larger than that in the blank control side or Merogel control side with a mean difference of 1.46 ± 0.76 mm (p = 0.002) or 0.54 ± 0.36 mm (p = 0.007), respectively. The preformed HA hydrogel-treated side showed better histology scores at 2 weeks in heterophils, fibrosis, and osteogenesis than the blank control, and the chronic inflammation (lymphocyte/plasmacyte infiltration) was not prevalent. Conclusion: During the postoperative follow-up period both of the two HA hydrogels significantly prevented neo-ostium stenosis and the preformed HA hydrogel promoted wound healing. Certain nasal neoplasms, such as ectopic menigioma, present as nasal polyps, together with similar symptoms. The present study reports the diagnosis and treatment of ectopic meningioma in the bilateral nasal olfactory cleft in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of ectopic meningioma in the nasal cavity. By retrospectively analyzing the clinical data and reviewing the associated literature, a detailed introduction to the clinical manifestation, diagnosis and treatment of ectopic meningioma of the nasal cavity was ascertained. The tumor was removed from the sinus by functional endoscopy surgery. Regular follow-up appointments were scheduled every three months, with no evidence of recurrence to date. The olfactory recovery and nasal ventilation were normal subsequent to surgery. Meningiomas are infrequently occurring tumors with unpredictable clinical behavior. A clear understanding of the etiology and appropriate diagnostic and management principles may aid in overcoming the challenges of treating primary extracranial meningiomas. © 2015, Spandidos Publications.
