Laser-welded steel sandwich constructions have gained their popularity as typical lightweight structures, and the welding quality is a critical point for their comprehensive performance. The special welding mode for the T-joint of an I-core sandwich plate proposes challenges that the incident laser should align the web plate. A novel method of deviation detection based on the metallic vapor plume for CO2 laser welding of I-core sandwich plates is investigated in this paper. On the basis of the plume images captured by a high-speed camera, the characteristics of instantaneous plasma plume are calculated, and their process parameters are extracted statistically in time domain and frequency field. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to synthesize the information of all feature parameters, and a complex indicator was formed to evaluate the deviation status. Experimental results showed that the monitoring method based on the characteristics of vapor plume was convenient, effective and promising in production. © 2014, Springer-Verlag London.
