A V150 drill pipe broke down in the process of tripping casing in ultradeep well. In order to find out the cause of the drill pipe failure, the macro and microstructure analysis, hardness test and linear elastic fracture mechanics survey were carried out. The results show that the failure type of the pipe is brittle fracture. The fracture originates from the gray spot near the outside surface of the welding zone. Meanwhile, the weld line fracture toughness and critical crack size are decreased due to the hard and brittle phases in welding zone which forme due to over tempering and too fast cooling rate. When the source crack depth reaches the critical size, the crack propagates rapidly and finally leads to brittle failure. ©, 2015, Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society of Heat Treatment. Several double shoulder tool joints with longitudinal crack resulting in drilling accident during the drilling process of a specific well. In order to find out the cause of longitudinal crack on the double shoulder tool joint, failure analysis of the failed joint was carried out by means of macro and micro morphology observation, chemical composition analysis, mechanical property test and finite element simulation of stress distribution. The results show that the structural feature of double shoulder is the main reason leading to failure of the tool joint. It is recommended that reducing the thread taper of tool joint can improve the anti-torsion capacity of joints and avoid the occurrence of failure. ©, 2015, Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society of Heat Treatment. In order to find out the cause of S135 grade steel drill pipe body fracture, failure analysis was performed based on macro and micro observation, chemical composition examination, mechanical property test, metallographic microstructure analysis. The results show that the fracture is caused by burning. The seamless tube is partly burning in the medium frequency induction heating furnace during the productive process, which results in grains coarse and grain boundary weakness. The extrusion load in the hot straightening process finally leads to rupture on burning area.

Fracture morphology, chemical composition, mechanical properties and the stress near the inner wall of triangular spiral drill pipe were analysed in order to find out the causes of crack. The results show that stress concentration at the inner wall of the pipe body scar is the main reason for pipe circumferential crack. It is suggested to improve inner surface quality of the triangular spiral drill pipe and avoid the tool marks.
