The paper has the following content: Firstly, the head injury theory is explained and the related design criteria are identified. Then the Foam layer design and material selection are conducted. Based on a combination of phase - space reconstruction of nonlinear dynamics with independent component analysis (ICA), a fire time series forecasting model was proposed by using support vector regression. The phase space of fire time series was reconstructed with the time delay and ICA, and then nonlinear support vector regression was used to construct the forecasting model, simulation results show that the proposed model can improve the fire time series forecasting accuracy. Fire engine is typical fire-fighting equipment, which also reflects the capacity of fire fighting. In this paper, the influence of fire engines on fire risk is analyzed qualitatively. Based on fire cases, the relationship model of quantitative property loss damaged by fire and the total number of fire engines needed to be dispatched is proposed, which could provide some reference and basis for the fire department to carry out fire-fighting equipment planning and preparatory scheme compilation. © 2012 The Authors. We presented a facile method for the preparation of a portable detection column integrated with silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) functionalized glass fibers for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Ag NPs were immobilized onto the surface of fibers through a two-step self-assembly process, and the cycling of the assembly process was repeated to optimize the SERS activity. The optimized fibers coated with homogeneous and dense Ag NPs were combined with a glass column, displaying good reproducibility. This combination could construct more "hot spots" and the spatial intra-channel structure for high mass transfer, and provide more sufficient interactions between the probing laser and metallic nanoparticles. The capability of the prepared column to have high sensitivity to dyes was demonstrated by the measurements of rhodamine 6G, alizarin red and methyl orange, with low concentrations of 28 pM, 64 pM and 0.36 nM, respectively. The SERS-active column fabricated by a facile, low-cost and high-yield approach is expected to be an effective and practical means for on-site application when rapid separation and detection of analytes in the liquid sample is needed. © 2015 The Royal Society of Chemistry. A 20-storey fire-occurred residential building in Japanese Hiroshima was taken as an example in the paper. The smoke movement and smoke temperature field in high-rise building fires were analyzed by numerical simulation. And the influence of fire smoke on the availability of using elevator for evacuation was discussed. Finally some effective suggestions were put forward. © 2012 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
