Cold stress resulting from chilling and freezing temperatures substantially reduces crop production worldwide. To identify genes critical for cold tolerance in plants, we screened Arabidopsis thaliana mutants for deregulated expression of a firefly luciferase reporter gene under the control of the C-REPEAT BINDING FACTOR2 (CBF2) promoter (CBF2:LUC). A regulator of CBF gene expression1 (rcf1-1) mutant that is hypersensitive to cold stress was chosen for in-depth characterization. RCF1 encodes a cold-inducible DEAD (Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp) box RNA helicase. Unlike a previously reported DEAD box RNA helicase (LOW EXPRESSION OF OSMOTICALLY RESPONSIVE GENES4 [LOS4]) that regulates mRNA export, RCF1 does not play a role in mRNA export. Instead, RCF1 functions to maintain proper splicing of pre-mRNAs; many cold-responsive genes are misspliced in rcf1-1 mutant plants under cold stress. Functional characterization of four genes (PSEUDO-RESPONSE REGULATOR5 [PRR5], SHAGGY-LIKE SERINE/THREONINE KINASE12 [SK12], MYB FAMILY TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR CIRCADIAN1 [CIR1], and SPFH/PHB DOMAIN-CONTAINING MEMBRANE-ASSOCIATED PROTEIN [SPFH]) that are misspliced in rcf1-1 revealed that these genes are cold-inducible positive (CIR1 and SPFH) and negative (PRR5 and SK12) regulators of cold-responsive genes and cold tolerance. Together, our results suggest that the cold-inducible RNA helicase RCF1 is essential for pre-mRNA splicing and is important for cold-responsive gene regulation and cold tolerance in plants. © 2013 American Society of Plant Biologists. Salt stress is an important environmental factor that significantly limits crop productivity worldwide. Studies on responses of plants to salt stress in recent years have identified novel signaling pathways and have been at the forefront of plant stress biology and plant biology in general. Thus far, research on salt stress in plants has been focused on cytoplasmic signaling pathways. In this study, we discovered a nuclear calcium-sensing and signaling pathway that is critical for salt stress tolerance in the reference plant Arabidopsis. Through a forward genetic screen, we found a nuclear-localized calcium-binding protein, RSA1 (SHORT ROOT IN SALT MEDIUM 1), which is required for salt tolerance, and identified its interacting partner, RITF1, a bHLH transcription factor. We show that RSA1 and RITF1 regulate the transcription of several genes involved in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species generated by salt stress and that they also regulate the SOS1 gene that encodes a plasma membrane Na+/H+ antiporter essential for salt tolerance. Together, our results suggest the existence of a novel nuclear calcium-sensing and -signaling pathway that is important for gene regulation and salt stress tolerance. © 2013 Guan et al.

Exchange rate time series is often characterized as chaotic in nature. The prediction using conventional statistical techniques and neural network with back propagation algorithm, which is most widely applied, do not give reliable prediction results. Exchange-rate time series is also a dynamic non-linear system, whose characteristics cannot be reflected by the static neutral network. The Nonlinear Autoregressive with eXogenous input (NARX) includes the feedback of the network output, therefore can reflect the dynamic property of the system. This paper proved the chaotic property of the exchange-rate time series, calculated the embedding dimension and time delay of the series, and established the exchange-rate forecast model using the NARX network. The result shows that the NARX network has better short-term forecast effect, comparing to the BP network and the SVM model. © 2010 IEEE.

Black rice (Oryza sativa L.) is often associated with blood lipid control. This study systematically assessed the inhibition of cholesterol absorption in vitro by black rice and explored cholesterol-lowering compounds present in this rice. Our results indicated that black rice extracts (BRE), which were aqueous, ethanol extracts and a fraction of macroporous resin caused the reduction of cholesterol absorption by inhibiting pancreatic lipase, decreasing the micellar cholesterol solubility and suppressing cholesterol uptake in Caco-2 cells. The inhibitory activity was positively associated with anthocyanin (cyanidin-3-glucoside (Cy-3-G) and peonidin-3-glucoside (Pn-3-G)) contents of the extracts. Therefore, the cholesterol absorption inhibiting properties of anthocyanins were further explored. The IC50 values of Cy-3-G and Pn-3-G against pancreatic lipase were 42.53 ± 4.45 and 18.13 ± 4.22 μg mL-1, respectively. Kinetic analysis suggested that the enzymatic inhibitory mode of Cy-3-G and Pn-3-G belonged to the competitive type. In mixed micelles, Cy-3-G and Pn-3-G dose dependently reduced the solubility of cholesterol. Meanwhile, a potential mechanism of cholesterol reduction by anthocyanins was investigated. Results showed that anthocyanins led to precipitation of cholesterol from micellar solution, which may induce the reduction of cholesterol. In Caco-2 cells, Cy-3-G and Pn-3-G (40 μg mL -1) exhibited a significant reduction in cholesterol uptake, and the degree of this reduction was almost the same as that observed in the group treated with Ezetimibe at the same concentration. These findings provide important evidence that anthocyanins may partly contribute to the inhibitory effects of black rice on cholesterol absorption, and thus may be applied for the prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolaemia. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Some sigmoidal growth models have been commonly used for forecasting energy consumption. In this article, a new sigmoidal growth model, which is an extended form of the Boltzmann 4-parameter function, has been developed for describing the evolution of biogas consumption in rural China. Additionally, the other three sigmoidal growth models (the general form of the logistic model, the Boltzmann 4-parameter function, and the Gompertz-Laird model) have also been applied to the same historical data on biogas consumption in rural China. These models have been compared using their goodness of fit to the historical data and the available national forecasts. The results revealed that the model newly-proposed in this paper is a very suitable candidate for forecasting biogas consumption in rural China. Copyright © Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Chaotic time-series is a dynamic nonlinear system whose features can not be fully reflected by Linear Regression Model or Static Neural Network. While Nonlinear Autoregressive with eXogenous input includes feedback of network output, therefore, it can better reflect the system's dynamic feature. Take annual active times of sunspot as an example, after verifying the chaos of sunspot time-series and calculating the series' embedding dimension and delay, we establish sunspot prediction model with NARX network. The result shows that compared with BP Network and ARIMA Model, NARX network can better predict the chaos. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

It is people’s unique personality characteristics that make emotional communication become one of the important factors in foreign language communication an obstacle. In addition to language, the most important in foreign language exchange is emotional communication. Only language full of emotion can make people understand each other’s true feelings, likes and dislikes, personality characteristics, promoting the further development of people’s relationship, and making society more harmonious. However, it’s not simple to implement emotional communication in foreign exchange, which is closely related to personality characteristics, education and life background of both sides. Major vault protein (MVP) is the predominant constituent of the vault particle, the largest known ribonuclear protein complex. Although emerging evidence have been establishing the links between MVP (vault) and multidrug resistance (MDR), little is known regarding exactly how the MDR activity of MVP is modulated during cellular response to drug-induced DNA damage (DDR). Bleomycin (BLM), an anticancer drug, induces DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) and consequently triggers the cellular DDR. Due to its physiological implications in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cell fate decision, 14-3-3ε was chosen as the pathway-specific bait protein to identify the critical target(s) responsible for HCC MDR. By using an LC-MS/MS-based proteomic approach, MVP was first identified in the BLM-induced 14-3-3ε interactome formed in HCC cells. Biological characterization revealed that MVP possesses specific activity to promote the resistance to the BLM-induced DDR. On the other hand, 14-3-3ε enhances BLM-induced DDR by interacting with MVP. Mechanistic investigation further revealed that 14-3-3ε, in a phosphorylation-dependent manner, binds to the phosphorylated sites at both Thr52 and Ser864 of the monomer of MVP. Consequently, the phosphorylation- dependent binding between 14-3-3ε and MVP inhibits the drug-resistant activity of MVP for an enhanced DDR to BLM treatment. Our findings provide an insight into the mechanism underlying how the BLM-induced interaction between 14-3-3ε and MVP modulates MDR, implicating novel strategy to overcome the chemotherapeutic resistance through interfering specific protein-protein interactions. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The economic system in China is composed of three internal parallel industries: primary, secondary and tertiary industries. To examine energy efficiency of the economic system, this paper proposes a parallel slacks-based measure approach. In the described approach, the measures of energy efficiencies and energy saving potentials for the whole system and its three industries are defined. Application of the proposed approach to the economic system in China during 1986-2012 shows that it can be effectively used to measure energy efficiency of the evaluated system with several parallel sub-systems. The institutional influential factors of energy efficiency in China are also examined. The following findings can be achieved based on the application results: (1) the inefficiency of the economic system in China is mainly sourced from the lower energy performance of the secondary industry; (2) energy efficiency of the economic system increases during the study time period with an exception during 2001-2005; (3) it is better for the whole economic system to improve energy efficiency, which can help to save much more energy consumption in production in China; and (4) economic development is estimated to have positive impacts on national energy efficiency, while energy structure adjustment and industrial structure optimization have negative effects on national energy efficiency. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
