In a smart substation, the data of mechanical characteristics of a circuit breaker are recorded in real time by online monitoring system, including the curves of energy-storage motor current, the curves of opening/closing coil current, and the curves of opening/closing distance. In this study, the effects of mechanical faults on the online monitoring results were analyzed according to all possible mechanical faults, and calculation formula for calculating the probability of mechanical faults were given with application parameters. Actual fault probability was calculated via fault simulation of a circuit breaker. With the proposed method, the operation status and fault probability of a circuit breaker can be calculated, thus safe operation of the circuit breaker is ensured.
