Background To evaluate the efficacy of flow-diverting devices (FDDs) used in the treatment for intracranial aneurysms (IAs), we performed a meta-analysis of published literature on FDDs. Methods A systematic electronic database search was conducted using MEDLINE, PubMed, Springer, and EBSCO for all accessible articles on FDDs published until December 2014. Abstracts, full-text manuscripts, and the reference lists of retrieved articles were analyzed. Random effects meta-analysis was used to pool the occlusion rate outcomes across studies. Results Fifty-nine studies containing efficacy data on 2263 patients with more than 2493 treated aneurysms were included in the analysis. The overall complete occlusion rate was 82.5% (95% CI, 78.8%-86%) across studies. The success rate of FDD implantation was 97.4% (95% CI, 95.4%-99.4%). The occlusion rate for anterior circulation aneurysms was 83.3% (95% CI, 71.2%-95.4%); with regard to complete occlusion, the odds ratio for anterior circulation aneurysms was significantly higher than that of posterior circulation IAs (odds ratio, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.00-3.73). Conclusions FDDs have high technical success rates in the management of IAs. Additional studies on well-designed, multicenter, randomized controlled trials will be required to validate the findings of the present study and to identify the best therapeutic strategy for IAs depending on their size, location, and characteristics. © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Despite the knowledge of many genetic alterations present in osteosarcoma, the complexity of this disease precludes placing its biology into a simple conceptual framework. Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) plays important roles in downregulating T-cell activation, thereby attenuating anti-tumor responses and increasing cancer susceptibility. Polymorphisms in the CTLA-4 gene are associated with different autoimmune diseases and cancers. The current study evaluated the association of four CTLA-4 gene mutations,-1661A/G (rs4553808),-318C/T (rs5742909), +49G/A (rs231775), and CT60A/G (rs3087243), with osteosarcoma in the Chinese population. CTLA-4 polymorphisms were detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism in 267 osteosarcoma patients and 282 age-matched healthy controls. Results showed that the CTLA-4 gene +49 AA genotype, +49 A allele, and GTAG haplotype were significantly more frequent in osteosarcoma patients than in controls (odds ratio [OR] 2.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.23-2.95, p = 0.007; OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.03-1.69, p = 0.029, and OR = 1.47, 95% CI 1.03-2.09, p = 0.033, respectively). The CTLA-4 +49G/A polymorphism and GTAG haplotype are associated with increased risk of osteosarcoma. © 2011 Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. Source

Objective. To investigate the relationship between serum procalcitonin (PCT) levels and prognosis in children with bacterial meningitis. Methods. Eighty-two child patients were included in this prospective study. The diagnosis of meningitis was based on clinical features and cerebrospinal fluid findings. PCT levels were measured with a specific immunoluminometric assay. Results. (a) Patients with bacterial meningitis had significantly higher serum PCT than those with viral meningitis. (b) The PCT levels of patients with severe sepsis or septic shock were significantly higher than those who had no or mild sepsis. (c) PCT levels decreased significantly in patients who had good curative effect, whereas PCT levels did not changed in patients who had no curative effect. (d) The PCT levels were significantly higher in those who died than those who survived. Conclusions. Serum PCT is related to the severity of disease in children with bacterial meningitis. A fall in PCT after treatment may have favorable prognostic significance. © 2015 SAGE Publications. Source

Seven lignans including (-)-maglifloenone, futoenone, magnoline, cylohexadienone, fargesone C, fargesone A and fargesone B were isolated and purified from Magnolia sprengeri Pamp. using high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) with two-step separation. In the first step, a stepwise elution mode with the two-phase solvent system composed of petroleum ether-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (1:0.8:0.6:1.2, 1:0.8:0.8:1, v/v) was used and 15.6mg of (-)-maglifloenone, 19.2mg of futoenone, 10.8mg of magnoline, 14.7mg of cylohexadienone and 217mg residues were obtained from 370mg crude extract. In the second step, the residues were successfully separated by HSCCC with the solvent system composed of petroleum ether-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (1:0.8:1.2:0.6, v/v), yielding 33.2mg of fargesone C, 47.5mg of fargesone A and 17.7mg of fargesone B. The purities of the separated compounds were all over 95% determined by HPLC. The chemical structures of these compounds were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and ESI-MS. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Source

Background: Candida utilis is widely used in bioindustry, and its cell mass needs to be produced in a cost effective way. Process optimization based on the experimental results is the major way to reduce the production cost. However, this process is expensive, time consuming and labor intensive. Mathematical modeling is a useful tool for process analysis and optimization. Furthermore, sufficient information can be obtained with fewer experiments by using the mathematical modeling, and some results can be predicted even without doing experiments. Results: In the present study, we performed the mathematical modeling and simulation for the cell mass production of Candida utilis based on limited batch and repeated fedbatch experiments. The model parameters were optimized using genetic algorithm (GA), and the processes were analyzed. Conclusions: Taken together, this newly developed method is efficient, labor saving and cost effective. Source
