The Cassia angustifolia seed gum (CAG), a galactomannan, isolated from the seeds of C. angustifolia was subjected to the carbamoylethylation which involved the reaction of CAG with acrylamide in an aqueous medium (water) in the presence of alkali (NaOH) as a catalyst. Alkali concentration, acrylamide concentration, liquor:gum ratio as well as reaction temperature and time were found to affect the extent of carbamoylethylation of CAG (expressed in terms of nitrogen content) and so, these were optimized. Degree of substitution (DS) and reaction efficiency was also determined. FTIR revealed the successful carbamoylethylation of CAG and rheological study conducted on 1 and 2% (w/w) solutions of the carbamoylethyl-CAG not only brought out the non-Newtonian pseudoplastic behaviour, but also high stability of carbamoylethyl-CAG solutions in comparison to solutions of the unmodified CAG. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. An investigation was carried out on mungbean at crop research centre of S.V.P. University of Agriculture and Technology Meerut Uttar Pradesh during spring season 2010. Field experiment was conducted consisting 17 treatments combination and laid out in randomized block design (RBD) with 3 replications on mungbean variety SML-668 which showed a significant variations among themselves in the the Leg-haemoglobin content of nodules, which was highest during the 30 DAS, and decreased during 40 DAS, 50 DAS and was minimum at harvest stage in all the treatments. Improved fertilization of sulphur through various treatments increased the Leg - haemoglobin content of nodules significantly over T17 (control) treatment. Variety SML-668 showed significant variations among themselves in the activity of RuBP case at vegetative, early pod setting and active pod filling stage. The magnitude of enzyme activity was in the range of 33.21 to 9.71 mg CO2 dm-2 hr-1 during vegetative stage, in treatment T15 (23.18) as compared to T17 control (9.71). This study develops inventory models in which demand rate is stock level dependent and three different holding cost functions: 1) constant holding cost; 2) exponential time dependent; 3) stock level dependent. Mathematical models have been developed for these three different situations to determine optimal order quantities, cycle time and optimal total inventory cost optimal. Truncated Taylor's series expansion is used for exponential terms for finding closed form numerical solutions. The results are illustrated with the help of numerical examples. The sensitivity analysis of the optimal solution with respect to the variation of the parameters of the model is also discussed. © 2015 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd. Source

White Piedra is a superficial mycoses characterized by nodules on the hair shaft, caused by the basidiomycetous yeast Trichosporon species. In this study 25 essential oils were extracted and screened against two Trichosporon species i.e. Trichosporon asahii and Trichosporon cutaneum. Both these fungi procured from MTCC Chandigarh were maintained on yeast malt agar plates and tubes at 25°C. Two screening methods viz., agar well diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration were adopted for the study. The results showed that the maximum anti-yeast activity against T. asahii and T. cutaneum was demonstrated by oil of Mentha piperita showing full inhibition of both the fungi, Melaleuca alternifolia with an inhibition zone of 45 and 40 mm, Cymbopogon winterians with inhibition zone of 45 and 45 mm and Cymbopogon flexuosus with 35 and 30 mm inhibition zones. The oil of Trachyspermum ammi exhibited 10 and 20 mm, Abelmoschus moschatus exhibited 30 and 20 mm, Salvia sclarea showed 20 and 18 mm and Jasminum officinale exhibited 25 and 15 mm inhibition zones showing moderate activity. The oil of Cyperus scariosus, Pogostemon patchouli and Rosa damascene showed no inhibition zone against both the fungi while Vetiveria zizanoides exhibited no inhibition in case of T. asahii and inhibition zone of 10 mm in case of T. cutaneum demonstrating comparatively low activity against both the fungi. These results support that the essential oils can be used to cure superficial mycoses and these oils may have significant role as pharmaceuticals and preservatives. © Triveni Enterprises, Lucknow (India).
