Features of structural and phase transformations, and also formation of a set of properties of Cr–Mo–V pipe steels are studied. A new unit has been designed to cool metal samples to the required temperature. Compressed gas is used as the cooling medium in the unit and is induced to vibrate by an acoustic radiator. Use of the unit in the electric steelmaking shop at the Severskii Pipe Plant has made it possible to obtain metal samples which are evenly cooled over their entire surface. The Severskii Pipe Plant has developed a technology for obtaining continuous-cast semifinished products made of pipe steels alloyed with cerium. Use of the technology makes it possible to homogeneously distribute the REM over the volume of the steel and give it satisfactory castability on continuous casters operating in the automatic regime. An automated system has been introduced on model 73-219 and model 20-102 electric-welded pipe mills (EWPMs) to determine the thickness of the pipe wall. The system makes it possible to use thinner skelp and reduce metal consumption by 35–50 kg/ton theoretical pipe weight. A draw bending machine for skelp was then introduced on EWPM 73-219, which further reduced metal consumption by 7 kg/ton theoretical pipe weight. Reconstruction of this machine and the planned introduction of a better method of controlling the skelp’s deformation during draw bending on EWPM 73-219 will make it possible to decrease metal use by another 20–25 kg/ton theoretical pipe weight. The planned introduction of an automated system to control the flying cutoff shears used to cut pipes lengthwise on EWPM 73-219 (in 2015) and EWPM 20-102 (in 2016) will lower metal consumption by additional amounts of 55 and 27 kg/ton theoretical and physical pipe weight, respectively. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

A description is given of the different stages in the process of improving the systems currently used to measure zinc use and calculate zinc-consumption items. A method is described for recycling dust that settles in the gas-cleaning filters used for electric steelmaking furnaces at the Severskii Pipe Plant. A description is also given of a technology for making iron-bearing granules which are based on this dust and also contain refining slag from a ladle-furnace. It is shown that the granules can be used as an iron-bearing additive in the production of Portland-cement clinker. Technologies have been developed for recycling all of the fine-grained wastes formed in metallurgical production operations at the Severskii Pipe Plant. The wastes are recycled into iron-flux briquettes. The optimum compositions of the briquettes were determined and industrial batches of briquettes were made and tested in an open-hearth furnace and 5-ton and 135-ton electric-arc furnaces. The results show the economic and environmental expediency of briquetting fine-grained industrial waste products and using them in steelmaking. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.
