In order to forecast and to follow the dispersion of odours around its treatment sites, SIAAP which treats wastewater for the entire region around Paris, developed and implemented an innovative tool called SYPROS. SYPROS is based on the 3D CFD dispersion tool Fluidyn-PANEIA and uses a Lagrangian puff model for real time calculations, together with a source definition module for determining the source emission rates in real time. In order to adjust the source emission the so-called remapping process has been implemented. A case study for the implementation of the comprehensive tool SYPROS on the Seine Aval site is described. The SIAAP1 has implemented a new specific tool called SYPROS based on analysing atmospheric dispersion for forecasting and monitoring the odour impact of wastewater treatment plants on the surrounding urban areas. Meteorological data and Total Reduced Sulphur concentrations monitored on-site are used in order to provide estimations of odour emissions generated by wastewater treatment facilities. The atmospheric dispersion of these odours is then assessed using a specific three-dimensional numerical model which provides information on the real-time odour impact of wastewater treatment plants. The weather forecast, the set-up of the facilities in use and data on wastewater quality are all used to assess the odour emissions generated. This method of evaluation is based on the results of a three-year on-site data analysis project. The odour impact of the wastewater treatment plants for the next two days is computed using forecasted odour emissions and weather forecast data with the help of another specific three-dimensional numerical model which is available for both internal purposes and public use. In such a context, the SIAAP, which deals with waste water for the entire region of Paris, France, has developed and implemented on their sites of Seine aval, Marne aval and Seine amont an innovative tool called SYPROS. SYPROS is based on the 3D CFD dispersion tool Fluidyn-PANEIA using a Lagrangian puff model for the real-time procedure and a source definition module to determine the source emission rates in real-time (i.e. with a 30 minutes delay in continuous mode). To this end the concept of real-time adjustment of the source emission, the so-called remapping process, has been implemented.
