In paper manufacturing, especially during coating, microorganisms are one of the key issues that must be considered. Microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts and moulds can potentially alter - and thus impair-the properties of pigment slurries and coating mixtures. The more complex the coating formulation, the greater its nutrient value to the microflora. Accordingly, the variety of species in coating mixture pipeline circuits is naturally significantly larger than in the pigments used. Each stage in production creates new and altered living conditions to which the microorganisms then adapt.

After starting the SCS dosing, the increased removal of existing deposits was found after a few days; however the number of web breaks and stains remained far below a critical level. After eight months, it is possible to say that the number of web breaks has significantly reduced from 45 to 15 per month. The head boxes show no deposits whatsoever now when opening. No sizing agents or other sticky contaminants are observed. No adverse effects are found in the sewage treatment plant. The treatment has an excellent price/performance ratio. System cleaning (boil outs) are not likely to be necessary. Since both products contribute only very slightly to the CSB, the ecological balance is also positive. It should be noted that there is only an increase in the costs required for the storage of the two products and the separate storage requirements for S-Combi-R.
