Neuropsychological assessment of patients with literacy problems is a difficult task that requires both to know the effects of literacy on cognition, and to use specific and standardized tools in this population. Otherwise, there is a significant risk of wrongly diagnosing a non-demented or otherwise to be unable to identify the manifestations of dementia symptoms. In this review, it will be discussed the cognitive profile of illiterate or poorly educated subjects and the many biases related to the use of conventional tests or adapted tools currently available. © 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS.
