« Researchers find some solid-state hydrogen storage materials could serve as less toxic solid propellants for rockets | Main | Bosch says its haptic gas pedal can reduce fuel consumption up to 7%; safety warnings via nav and V2X systems » Tottori Prefecture, Tottori Gas Co., Ltd, Sekisui House Ltd. and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. signed an agreement to pursue jointly Tottori Prefecture’s project to establish a base for a hydrogen energy demonstration (and environmental education). This will be Japan’s first case where hydrogen energy will be utilized through the integration of a hydrogen station which creates hydrogen from renewable energy, a smart house and a fuel cell vehicle (FCV). The purpose of this project is to promote the popularization of smart houses and FCVs. The project will install, for the first time on the Sea of Japan side of the archipelago, a Smart Hydrogen Station (SHS) using Honda’s high-differential-pressure electrolyzer that supplies hydrogen created by electrolysis of water using renewable energy. Honda will also supply its new Clarity fuel cell vehicle. The SHS and solar panels will be installed on the property of Tottori Gas Group (located in Gotandacho in Tottori City). Using electricity generated from a solar power generation system, this SHS will create and supply hydrogen to a FCV. In the meantime, an exhibition building of Sekisui House already existing within the same property will be turned into a smart house. Visitors will be able to have firsthand experience with technologies and systems that enable an environmentally-responsible, comfortable and smart lifestyle, including power feeding from the fuel cell of a FCV to a smart house. In addition, a new facility will be built within the same property for the purpose of offering environmental education for people of all ages. Tottori Prefecture will bear a portion of the SHS installation cost and the cost of installing a smart house and study area. Tottori prefecture will also act as a liaison among four parties. Tottori Gas will be responsible mainly for installing and operating the SHS. Sekisui House will be responsible mainly for designing and installing the smart house.

Indoor air-conditions may play an important role in human health. Investigation of house conditions that promote health revealed that negatively charged-particle dominant indoor air-conditions (NAC) induced immune stimulation. NAC was established using fine charcoal powder on walls and ceilings and utilizing forced negatively charged particles (approximate diameter: 20 nm) dominant in indoor air-conditions created by applying an electric voltage (72 V) between the backside of the walls and the ground. We reported previously that these conditions induced a slight and significant increase of interleukin-2 during 2.5 h stay, and an increase of natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity, when examining human subjects after a two-week night stay under these conditions. In the present study, we investigated whether exposure to NAC in vitro affects immune conditions. Although the concentrations of particles were different, an incubator for cell culture with NAC was set and cellular compositions and functions of various freshly isolated human lymphocytes derived from healthy donors were assayed in the NAC incubator and compared with those of cultures in a standard (STD) incubator. Results showed that NAC cultivation caused an increase of CD25 and PD-1 expressing cells in the CD4 positive fraction, enhancement of NK cell cytotoxicity, production of interferon-y (IFN), and slight enhancement of regulatory T cell function. In addition, the formula designated as the immune-index clearly differed between STD and NAC culture conditions. Thus, NAC conditions may promote human health through slight activation of the immune system against cancer cells and virus infection as shown by this in vitro study and our previously reported human studies.

Previous neuroimaging studies that examined cerebral blood flow during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep have reported inconsistent findings regarding the activity of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Although most previous positron emission tomography (PET) studies failed to detect DLPFC activation during REM sleep, several studies have observed DLPFC activation, possibly reflecting transient prefrontal activities related to REM. More recently, an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study observed REM-locked activation of the DLPFC during REM sleep. The present study investigated hemodynamic changes of the DLPFC throughout the REM sleep period in 25 subjects using near-infrared spectroscopy. Continuous monitoring of changes in the hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and tissue oxygenation index (TOI, proportion of oxygenated-Hb to total-Hb) in the bilateral DLPFC was conducted every 0.5 s, simultaneously with polysomnographic recordings. Eight of the 25 subjects showed REM sleep, and all indicated a clear increase in both the oxygenated-Hb concentration and TOI from baseline at the occurrence of first REM, relative to prior stage 2 sleep. The results indicate that the appearance of the first REM that occurred just after onset of the REM sleep closely coincides with the activation of the DLPFC, which could play a role in cognitive activities during REM sleep in humans. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The purpose of this paper is to disclose the fundamental properties of a multiple isolation structure that contains a base isolation story and a middle isolation story. Design formulae of stiffness and damping coefficient of both isolation stories are derived under condition that a base isolation building and a multiple isolation building have the same 1st natural period and damping factor. It is shown that the multiple isolation building designed by the formulae behaves much smaller interstory drift of base isolation story than that of the base isolation building. Eigenvalue analysis and time history analysis to multi-degree-of-freedom models are performed to verify the accuracy of the design formulae.
