A facile synthetic method for benzothiazoles and benzoxazoles comprising the reaction of corresponding 2-aminothiophenol and 2-aminophenol with various substituted aromatic carboxylic acids using Samarium(III) triflate as a catalyst has been described. The advantages of the method are short reaction times and aqueous reaction media and easy work-up. The catalysts can be recovered for the subsequent reactions and reused without any appreciable loss of efficiency. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Analysis of important physicochemical characteristics of water from Chitri reservoir, Maharashtra was carried out during January 2009 to December 2009. The study helps in proper utilization of water, agricultural development, industrial development, establishment of aquatic bird sanctuaries, pollution control, and also for improving the biodiversity. The water temperature ranges from 17 to 34°C, pH from 7.3 to 8.1, DO from 6.50 to 10.10 mg/L, total dissolved solids from 40 to 160 mg/L, transparency from 75 to 148 cm and total alkalinity from 24 to 106 mg/L. Free carbon dioxide was totally absent during the entire study period. Chlorides and total hardness of water varied from 30.1 to 45.1 mg/L and 54 to 107 mg/L respectively.

Various 2-acetyl-5-substituted benzofurans and their subsequent transformation into benzofuran analogues of α, β, unsaturated ketenes by reaction with various 5-substituted-5-hydroxyl benzaldehydes have been synthesized. These benzofuran analogues of α, β, unsaturated ketones are further modified chemically into different nitrogen heterocyclic systems. In present studies, the synthesis of oxopyrimidines coupled with various benzofurans was reported. The structures of these compounds were established on the basis of elemental analysis and spectral studies. Screening of antibacterial activity of synthesized oxopyrimidines were also carried out by qualitative methods.

A series of 2,4,6-trisubstituted [1,3,5]triazines were synthesized and evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against two representative Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and two fungi. Biological data revealed that among all the compounds screened, compounds 3f, 3g, 3h, 3i, 3m, 3o and 3p found to have promising antimicrobial activity against all the selected pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Out of the synthesized compounds seven analogues have shown MIC in the range of 6.25-12.5 g/mL. These compounds were generally nontoxic and may prove useful as antimicrobial agents.
