A Gleeble 3800 thermomechanical process physical simulator unit is used to study the structure and mechanical properties of corrosion-resistant steel with a high boron content intended for production of hexagonal pipes for exhausted nuclear fuel storage. Compression tests at room and elevated temperature show that with an increase in test temperature from 20 to 600°C yield strength and flow stress decrease by a factor of two in the steady-state stage, and over the whole test temperature range the steel demonstrates good ductility in compression. The steel’s structure does not undergo marked changes during deformation: stringing, formed during hot forging, is retained during subsequent plastic deformation. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York. Parameters are developed for combined extra-furnace treatment of molten blast-furnace iron using pulsating blowing by inert gas. The new technology provides a marked improvement in operating life of replacement components of metallurgical equipment (molds, pallets, slag pots). The possibility is demonstrated of repeated use of naturally-alloyed pig iron in the form of mold scrap under induction melting conditions for heat-resistant components. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York. Electroslag melting (EMR) technology is promising, in particular for production of hollow billets used in the manufacture of critical high quality components for power generation with high added cost. A technology is developed at NPO TsNIITMASh for production of high quality pipe billets by the ESM method for thermal and nuclear power plant pipelines that are developed within Russia at the Energomash (Belgorod) – BZEM. One of the main factors of the technology is control of ingot the melting rate that affects ingot quality. The effect of melting rate on ESM billet quality is studied using computer and full-scale modeling, remelting parameters are analyzed, and metal microstructure and properties are determined. Certain general trends in the radial and axial distribution of segregates in forging ingots are identified based on computer modeling and a generalization of data from studies of chemical heterogeneity in such ingots.
