Hot dip galvanized reinforcements obtained in industrial conditions were passivated using [CrVI] and [CrIII] based passivation solutions and were introduced in fresh concrete. Corrosion tests were carried out using a saturated Cu/CuSO4 reference electrode and a graphite counter electrode. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data were analyzed using Nyquist plots by considering the metal-coating-concrete interface as an electrical equivalent circuit model. The polarization resistance and coating capacitance were determined and the corrosion behavior of these passivated coatings was evaluated. The changes in the impedance characteristics were observed during the first 48 hours from the introduction of the rebar in the fresh concrete. The results showed differences in protective characteristics between unpassivated hot dip galvanized rebars, those passivated with hexavalent chromium and the ones passivated with trivalent chromium. © 2014, VEKOR Ltd.
