Methods and apparatus for operating a downhole tool within a wellbore adjacent a subterranean formation to pump contaminated fluid from the formation into the downhole tool while measuring first and second fluid properties of the contaminated fluid. The contaminated fluid comprises native fluid from the formation and a contaminant. The downhole tool is in communication with surface equipment located at surface. The downhole tool and/or surface equipment is operated to estimate a formation volume factor of the contaminated fluid based on at least one of the first and second fluid properties of the contaminated fluid. A linear relationship is then estimated between the first fluid property and a function that relates the first fluid property to the second fluid property and the estimated formation volume factor of the contaminated fluid. A fluid property of the contaminant is then estimated based on the estimated linear relationship.


A downhole tool to make one or more downhole measurements of laser-induced vaporization and/or pyrolysis of hydrocarbons is provided and disposed at a desired location within a wellbore. A tool head of the downhole tool is brought into sealing engagement with the wellbore wall. The fluid within an interior region enclosed by the tool head and the wellbore wall is evacuated and a measurement spot is irradiated with a laser to generate volatile hydrocarbons and/or pyrolytic hydrocarbons. Measurements are made on the volatile hydrocarbons and/or pyrolytic hydrocarbons and one or more formation properties are inferred based on the measurements. A low level of laser radiation intensity, irradiating some or all of the wellbore wall enclosing the interior region, may be used to prevent measurement contamination, and both medium power and high power levels of laser radiation may be used to first vaporize and then pyrolyze the hydrocarbons.

A system and method for transmitting data from within a wellbore to a surface location includes downhole tool that is run into the wellbore. The downhole tool includes a sensor, a processor, and a transmitter. A pressure response in the wellbore is measured with the sensor. A function that approximates the pressure response is determined. The function is transmitted to the surface location with the transmitter.

A method for obtaining gain compensated electromagnetic logging while drilling propagation measurements includes rotating an electromagnetic logging while drilling tool in a subterranean wellbore. Electromagnetic voltage measurements are acquired from the receiver antennas while rotating. The acquired voltage measurements are processed to compute harmonic voltage coefficients. Ratios of selected ones of the harmonic voltage coefficients are in turn processed to compute gain compensated quantities including symmetrized and anti-symmetrized quantities.

The method includes deriving a sonic-derived acoustic impedance Z(sonic) from the sonic measurements deriving an ultrasonic-derived acoustic impedance Z(ultrasonic) from the ultrasonic measurements comparing the Z(sonic) with respect to the Z(ultrasonic), and determining whether an annular fill behind the casing is well bonded, partially bonded, comprises wet microannulus, or comprises dry microannulus based on the comparison of the Z(sonic) with respect to the Z(ultrasonic).
