To recognize the clinical characteristics and outcomes of neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM), the authors retrospectively reviewed 1 NDM baby in their department and compared their data with 39 NDM cases reported in the available Chinese literature between January 1986 and December 2010. Most of the cases were located near the eastern and southern coasts of China, and clinical manifestation of 72.5% of the cases occurred in 4-week-old infants. Hyperglycemia and glycosuria findings were seen in all the patients and in 47.5% with intrauterine growth retardation. Moreover, 30.0% of the cases had polyuria, 52.5% had dehydration, and 47.5% had ketoacidosis. Cases with hyperglycemia, dehydration, and ketoacidosis recovered mostly. Ten NDM cases had persisted after 1 to 11 years of follow-up, 3 cases maintained normal blood sugar, and 7 cases had poor sugar control. NDM is a rare condition and early management includes fluid and insulin and later management depends on the transient or permanent nature of the condition. © The Author(s) 2012. Source

Background: The resistance of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) to antibiotics is increasing worldwide, lowering its efficacy in current eradication therapies. This study evaluated H. pylori resistance to antibiotics in the southeast coastal region of China and suggests appropriate alternatives. Materials and Methods: Seventeen thousand seven hundred and thirty one H. pylori strains were collected from eight areas of two provinces in coastal southeast China from 2010 to 2012. The resistance of these strains to six antibiotics was tested using the agar dilution method. Results: The resistance rates to clarithromycin, metronidazole, levofloxacin, amoxicillin, gentamicin and furazolidone were 21.5, 95.4, 20.6, 0.1, 0.1 and 0.1%, respectively. Double, triple and quadruple antibacterial resistant percentages were 25.5, 7.5 and 0.1%, respectively. A positive association between the resistance to levofloxacin and to clarithromycin was found, but there was a negative correlation in the resistances to levofloxacin and to metronidazole. Conclusions: The prevalence of H. pylori resistance to clarithromycin, metronidazole, levofloxacin and multiple antibiotics in coastal southeast China is high. Choice of therapy should be individualized based on a susceptibility test in this region of the country. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Source

To evaluate the clinical efficacy of artificial joint replacement in treatment of patients with metastatic tumors involving the proximal femur. A total of 7 patients with metastatic tumors involving the proximal femur treated with artificial joint replacement were selected from Sanmen People's Hospital, including metastatic breast carcinoma in 2 patients, lung carcinoma in 2 patients, prostate carcinoma, renal carcinoma and colorectal carcinoma in 1 patient each. Five of the 7 patients suffered pathologic fracture during their course of disease. All patients were treated with surgical removal of tumors and artificial joint replacement, including 5 patients with hemiarthroplasty and 2 with total hip arthroplasty. All the 7 patients received complete follow-up for a mean of 21 months. There were no such postoperative complications as local infection, prosthesis dislocation, prosthesis loosing or subluxation. The average survival time was 26 months (5-67 months). According to the Ennecking functional scoring system, the patients were rated as excellent in 4 and good in 3, and the excellent and good rate was 100.0%. Conclusion Artificial joint replacement for patients with metastatic tumors involving the proximal tumor could lead to significant improvement in pain relief, affected limb functional recovery and quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the expression of MMP-26 and MMP-7 in esophageal cancer tissues and their significance. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry assay was used to analyze the relationship of MMP-7 and MMP-26 and esophageal cancer. SPSS17.0 was used for the statistics analysis. RESULTS: In the group of more than 60 years old and less than 60 years old, the expressions of MMP-26 were 88.0%(44/50) and 25.4%(15/59), in stageI-II and stage III-IV the expressions were 80.0%(40/50) and 32.2%(19/59), in squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma the expressions were 48.4%(30/62) and 61.7%(29/47), in high and low differentiation adenocarcinoma the expressions were 90.0%(27/30) and 11.8%(2/17), in high and low differentiation squamous carcinoma the expressions were 47.1%(16/34) and 50.0%(14/28), and the expression of MMP-26 was correlated to age, pathology style and differentiation(P<0.01). The expression of MMP-7 in squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma were 45.2%(28/62) and 59.6%(28/47), in stageI-II and stage III-IV the expressions were 24.0%(12/50) and 74.2%(46/59), which was correlated to clinical staging(P<0.01), and not to age and sex. CONCLUSION: The expressions of MMP-26 and MMP-7 are correlated to the prognosis of esophageal cancer, and the detection is good for the treatment and estimation of esophageal cancer. Source

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most frequent primary malignancies of the liver and is resistant to anticancer drugs. Hypoxia is a master cause of tumor resistance to chemotherapy. Hypoxia-inducible factor-one alpha (HIF-1α) plays a key role in the adaptive responses to hypoxic environments. HIF-1α is constitutively up-regulated in several tumor types might thus be implicated in tumor therapy resistance. We hypothesized that disruption of HIF-1α pathway could reverse the hypoxia-induced resistance to chemotherapy. In this report, we prepared DOTAP (a liposome formulation of a mono-cationic lipid N-1-(2,3-Dioleoyloxy)]- N,N,N-trimethylammonium propane methylsulfate in sterile water) cationic liposomes containing an antisense oligonucleotide (AsODN) against HIF-1α. Gene transfer of antisense HIF-1α was effective in suppressing tumor growth, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation, and inducing cell apoptosis.
