This paper presents a technique for predicting phase currents in vector-controlled pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) inverters using single dc-link current sensor. There is a limitation for current measurements in the inverters. The measurements are executed in the effective voltages, not in the zero voltage. The current measured in the dc-link and then reconstructed to the phase value is used as a feedback value for controlling an ac machine. Here, there is a difference between the reconstructed current and measured currents at the top or bottom of PWM carrier such as in the conventional inverters. It changes according to the reference voltages, load conditions, noises, and disturbances. Next, it can cause deterioration of the performance of current control by increasing ripples in currents and torque. This paper analyzes the difference in the drives of a permanent magnet synchronous motor and proposes a method for reducing it. The proposed method predicts the currents measured at the fixed sampling points from those measured in the dc-link and the PWM patterns of voltage outputs. It can reduce current ripples and the experimental results verify it. It is applicable to the vapor compression refrigeration process with the low-cost and high-performance feature. © 2009 IEEE.

As the feature size of silicon technology approaches sub-10nm, there are concerns that it cannot satisfy the demand for high performance devices through scaling any longer. However, through innovations in materials, structures, and processes, it will continue to provide higher-performance components to electronics systems for the coming decades. BACKGROUND: Snoring can be a representative symptom of a sleep disorder, and thus snoring detection is quite important to improving the quality of an individual's daily life. The purpose of this research is to develop an unconstrained snoring detection technique that can be integrated into a smartphone application. In contrast with previous studies, we developed a practical technique for snoring detection during ordinary sleep by using the built-in sound recording system of a smartphone, and the recording was carried out in a standard private bedroom.METHOD: The experimental protocol was designed to include a variety of actions that frequently produce noise (including coughing, playing music, talking, rining an alarm, opening/closing doors, running a fan, playing the radio, and walking) in order to accurately recreate the actual circumstances during sleep. The sound data were recorded for 10 individuals during actual sleep. In total, 44 snoring data sets and 75 noise datasets were acquired. The algorithm uses formant analysis to examine sound features according to the frequency and magnitude. Then, a quadratic classifier is used to distinguish snoring from non-snoring noises. Ten-fold cross validation was used to evaluate the developed snoring detection methods, and validation was repeated 100 times randomly to improve statistical effectiveness.RESULTS: The overall results showed that the proposed method is competitive with those from previous research. The proposed method presented 95.07% accuracy, 98.58% sensitivity, 94.62% specificity, and 70.38% positive predictivity.CONCLUSION: Though there was a relatively high false positive rate, the results show the possibility for ubiquitous personal snoring detection through a smartphone application that takes into account data from normally occurring noises without training using preexisting data.


Carbon microcapsules containing silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs)carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanocomposite (Si-CNT@C) have been fabricated by a surfactant mediated solgel method followed by a carbonization process. Silicon nanoparticlescarbon nanotubes (Si-CNT) nanohybrids were produced by a wet-type beadsmill method. To obtain Si-CNT nanocomposites with spherical morphologies, a silica precursor (tetraethylorthosilicate, TEOS) and polymer (PMMA) mixture was employed as a structure-directing medium. Thus the Si-CNT/Silica-Polymer microspheres were prepared by an acid catalyzed solgel method. Then a carbon precursor such as polypyrrole (PPy) was incorporated onto the surfaces of pre-existing Si-CNT/silica-polymer to generate Si-CNT/Silica-Polymer@PPy microspheres. Subsequent thermal treatment of the precursor followed by wet etching of silica produced Si-CNT@C microcapsules. The intermediate silica/polymer must disappear during the carbonization and etching process resulting in the formation of an internal free space. The carbon precursor polymer should transform to carbon shell to encapsulate remaining Si-CNT nanocomposites. Therefore, hollow carbon microcapsules containing Si-CNT nanocomposites could be obtained (Si-CNT@C). The successful fabrication was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). These final materials were employed for anode performance improvement in lithium ion battery. The cyclic performances of these Si-CNT@C microcapsules were measured with a lithium battery half cell tests. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for generating a realistic 3D human face from a single 2D face image for the purpose of synthesizing new 2D face images at arbitrary poses using gender and ethnicity specific models. We employ the Generic Elastic Model (GEM) approach, which elastically deforms a generic 3D depth-map based on the sparse observations of an input face image in order to estimate the depth of the face image. Particularly, we show that Gender and Ethnicity specific GEMs (GE-GEMs) can approximate the 3D shape of the input face image more accurately, achieving a better generalization of 3D face modeling and reconstruction compared to the original GEM approach. We qualitatively validate our method using publicly available databases by showing each reconstructed 3D shape generated from a single image and new synthesized poses of the same person at arbitrary angles. For quantitative comparisons, we compare our synthesized results against 3D scanned data and also perform face recognition using synthesized images generated from a single enrollment frontal image. We obtain promising results for handling pose and expression changes based on the proposed method. © 2012 IEEE.

To recover a sparse signal from an underdetermined system, we often solve a constrained ℓ1-norm minimization problem. In many cases, the signal sparsity and recovery performance can be further improved by replacing the ℓ1 norm with a "weighted" ℓ1 norm. Without prior information about the signal's nonzero elements, the procedure for selecting weights is iterative in nature. Common approaches update the weights at every iteration using the solution of a weighted ℓ1 problem from the previous iteration. This paper presents two homotopy-based algorithms that efficiently solve reweighted ℓ1 problems. First, we present an algorithm that quickly updates the solution of a weighted ℓ1 problem as the weights change. Since the solution changes only slightly with small changes in weights, we develop a homotopy algorithm that replaces old weights with new ones in a small number of computationally inexpensive steps. Second, we propose an algorithm that solves a weighted ℓ1 problem by adaptively selecting weights while estimating the signal. This algorithm integrates the reweighting into every step along the homotopy path by changing the weights according to changes in the solution and its support, allowing us to achieve a high quality signal reconstruction by solving a single homotopy problem. We compare both algorithms' performance, in terms of reconstruction accuracy and computational complexity, against state-of-the-art solvers and show that our methods have smaller computational cost. We also show that the adaptive selection of the weights inside the homotopy often yields reconstructions of higher quality. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

A new approach to the minimum energy impulse intercept problem for spacecraft in orbit is explored. The types of orbits investigated in this paper are not restricted to a particular one. The constrained optimization technique is formulated with the universal variable, which is used to describe orbit information with sufficient accuracy for general types of orbits. Two optimization problems are posed. First, a problem for minimum velocity change and time of flight for intercept are investigated with the constraint on the final position of two satellites. Next, the so-called wait time is also added as an additional parameter to be determined. Although a closed-form solution is not obtained, the Newton iteration technique is successfully applicable. Finally, by numerically comparing the proposed solution to the Hohmann transfer, the suggested approach is demonstrated to be a feasible technique applicable to a broad class of orbit transfer problems. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

The latest High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard only requires 50% bit-rate of the H.264/AVC at the same perceptual quality, but with a significant encoder complexity increase. Hence, it is necessary and inevitable to develop fast HEVC encoding algorithms for its potential market adoption. In this paper, we propose a fast intra mode decision for the HEVC encoder. The overall fast intra mode decision algorithm consists of both micro- and macro-level schemes. At the micro-level, we propose the Hadamard cost-based progressive rough mode search (pRMS) to selectively check the potential modes instead of traversing all candidates (i.e., up to 35 in HEVC). Fewer effective candidates will be chosen by the pRMS for the subsequent rate-distortion optimized quantization (RDOQ) to derive the rate-distortion (R-D) optimal mode. An early RDOQ skip method is also introduced to further the complexity reduction. At the macro-level, we introduce the early coding unit (CU) split termination if the estimated R-D cost [through aggregated R-D costs of (partial) sub-CUs] is already larger than the R-D cost of the current CU. On average, the proposed fast intra mode decision provides about 2.5×speedup (without any platform or source code level optimization) with just a 1.0% Bjontegaard delta rate (BD-rate) increase using the HEVC common test condition. Moreover, our proposed solution also demonstrates the state-of-the-art performance in comparison with other works. © 2013 IEEE.


The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate the reliability and variability of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) calculations between two-point and multipoint b value analyses in prostate cancer and benign prostate tissue. Forty-eight consecutive patients with suspected prostate cancer underwent diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) at 3 T followed by surgery. DWI was examined under different b values. ADC maps were generated by two different methods: two-point b values (0 and 1000 s/mm(2)) and multipoint b values (0, 100, 300, 700, and 1000 s/mm(2)). Two independent readers measured ADC in the cancers, benign peripheral zone and transition zone, and obturator internus muscle. Statistical analyses were performed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), correlation of variation (CV), Bland-Altman test, and paired Student t test. The intermethod ADC calculation revealed excellent reliability for all tissues in both readers: cancer (ICC = 0.979-0.981), transition zone (0.989-0.993), peripheral zone (0.990-0.994), and obturator internus muscle (0.967-0.975). In both readers, the variability of the intermethod ADC calculation was 2.90-3.09% CV in cancer, 1.16-1.48% CV in the transition zone, 1.03-1.29% CV in the peripheral zone, and 2.44-2.62% CV in the obturator internus muscle. For interreader variability, the CVs of ADC calculation for two-point versus multipoint b value analyses in all tissues were 7.21-9.65% versus 7.18-9.01%. For estimating ADC values on 3-T DWI of the prostate, two-point b value analysis seems to present excellent correlation with multipoint b value analysis, with little error in accuracy.


This paper investigates a practical universal modeling of multi-cell battery strings in series and parallel connections to show high an accuracy SOC (state-of-charge) estimation based on the EKF (extended Kalman filter) if cell-to-cell variations are taken into account and settled by the screening process. Through the screening process for the selection of the cells that have similar electrochemical characteristics, this study describes an effort to provide each equivalent circuit model for multi-cell battery strings in series, parallel, and series/parallel connections. Three circuit-based multi-cell battery models are validated against the experimental data of the discharging/charging behavior in terms of the discharging/charging voltage, discharge capacity, OCV (open-circuit voltage), and internal resistances when compared with the experimental data of a single cell. According to the relation between a multi-cell battery string and a single cell, these models can be easily developed from a single cell model, the validity of which was demonstrated regarding its high accuracy in predicting cell performance. The proposed multi-cell battery model has been extensively validated by the model-based SOC estimation using the EKF for a Li-Ion cell. If the model parameters of a single cell are correctly measured and used in the multi-cell battery model, the accuracy in the SOC estimation of a multi-cell battery string could be significantly improved. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.


c-Met, the high affinity receptor for hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), is one of the most frequently activated tyrosine kinases in many human cancers and a target for cancer therapy. However, inhibitory targeting of c-Met with antibodies has proven difficult, because most antibodies have intrinsic agonist activity. Therefore, the strategy for reducing the agonism is critical for successful development of cancer therapies based on anti-c-Met antibodies. Here we developed a mechanism-based assay method for rapid screening of anti-c-Met antibodies, involving the determination of Akt phosphorylation and c-Met degradation for agonism and efficacy, respectively. Using the method, we identified an antibody, F46, that binds to human c-Met with high affinity (Kd = 2.56 nM) and specificity, and induces the degradation of c-Met in multiple cancer cells (including MKN45, a gastric cancer cell line) with minimal activation of c-Met signaling. F46 induced c-Met internalization in both HGF-dependent and HGF-independent cells, suggesting that the degradation of c-Met results from antibody-mediated receptor internalization. Furthermore, F46 competed with HGF for binding to c-Met, resulting in the inhibition of both HGF-mediated invasion and angiogenesis. Consistently, F46 inhibited the proliferation of MKN45 cells, in which c-Met is constitutively activated in an HGF-independent manner. Xenograft analysis revealed that F46 markedly inhibits the growth of subcutaneously implanted gastric and lung tumors. These results indicate that F46, identified by a novel mechanism-based assay, induces c-Met degradation with minimal agonism, implicating a potential role of F46 in therapy of human cancers.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease and a growing health concern, especially in children, because of its high prevalence and associated low quality of life. Genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, or interactions between them contribute to the pathophysiology of AD. Therefore, it is very important to identify and control risk factors from the environment in susceptible subjects for successful treatment and prevention. Both indoor and outdoor air pollution, which are of increasing concern with urbanization, are well-known environmental risk factors for asthma, whereas there is relatively little evidence in AD. This review highlights epidemiologic and experimental data on the role of air pollution in patients with AD. Recent evidence suggests that a variety of air pollutants, such as environmental tobacco smoke, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, toluene, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter, act as risk factors for the development or aggravation of AD. These air pollutants probably induce oxidative stress in the skin, leading to skin barrier dysfunction or immune dysregulation. However, these results are still controversial because of the low number of studies, limitations in study design, inaccurate assessment of exposure and absorption, and many other issues. Further research about the adverse effects of air pollution on AD will help to expand our understanding and to establish a better strategy for the prevention and management of AD. © 2014 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Accurate diagnosis of indeterminate biliary lesions is essential for treatment planning. The currently available techniques have some limitations in evaluating indeterminate biliary lesions. SpyGlass single-operator peroral cholangioscopy system has been developed to overcome these limitations. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of SpyGlass visual assessment and SpyBite biopsy in patients with indeterminate biliary lesions. We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from 36 patients with indeterminate biliary strictures or filling defects who had inconclusive results on the cross-sectional imaging study from September 2010 to October 2013. Four patients were excluded because of the presence of a metastatic mass and an ampulla of Vater cancer. Thirty-two patients (19 men, mean age 63.7 years) with indeterminate biliary lesions underwent SpyGlass cholangioscopy. The cholangioscopy procedure with SpyGlass was technically successful in all of the cases except for one case because of the intraprocedural breakage of the SpyGlass optic probe (96.8%, 31/32). The biopsy specimens from nineteen patients were obtained using SpyBite forceps. The sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy of SpyGlass visual assessment and SpyBite biopsy for the diagnosis of malignancy were 100% (21/21) and 64.2% (9/14), 90% (9/10) and 100% (5/5), and 96.7% (30/31) and 73.6% (14/19), respectively. Procedure-related complications were noted in three cases; postsphincterotomy bleeding in one case and mild pancreatitis in two cases. SpyGlass cholangioscopy with SpyBite biopsy is highly accurate and safe for differentiating malignant lesions from benign lesions in patients with indeterminate biliary lesions.

Low-power GPUs have become ubiquitous, they can be found in domains ranging from wearable and mobile computing, to automotive systems. With this ubiquity has come a wider range of applications exploiting low-power GPUs, placing ever increasing demands on the expected performance and power efficiency of the devices. Future low-power system-on-chips will have to provide higher performance and be able to support more complex applications, without using any additional power. The strict power limitations means that these demands cannot be met through hardware improvements alone, however, but the software must better exploit the available resources. Unfortunately, programmers are hindered when creating low-power GPU software by the quality of current performance analysis tools. In low-power GPU contexts there is only a minimal amount of performance information, and essentially no power information, available to the programmer. As software becomes more complex it becomes increasingly unmanageable for programmers to optimise the software for low-power devices. This project proposes to aid the programmer in creating software for low-power GPUs by building on the results of the first LPGPU project to provide a complete performance analysis process for the programmer. This project will address all aspects of performance analysis, from hardware power and performance counters, to a toolchain that processes and visualises information from these counters, to applications that will be used as use-cases to drive the entire design. To access the new hardware performance counters a standardisable API will be produced to interface to a prototype hardware implementation. This will let the analysis and visualisation tool connect to any GPU driver that implements the API. The consortiums expertise will be used not only to drive the initial design of the API and analyses, but also multiple application use-cases will be developed to demonstrate the efficacy of the toolchain.


Disclosed is a sounding reference signal transmission method which is efficient in an uplink wireless telecommunications system using a multiple antenna technique and sounding reference signal hopping. A terminal is equipped with a plurality of antennas, and a base station receives the sounding reference signal transmitted from these antennas and estimates the uplink channel state of each antenna. The sounding reference signal performs frequency hopping so that the base station determines the channel condition for the entire bandwidth to which data is transmitted in the uplink system. In this environment, the sounding reference signal is transmitted through an antenna pattern through the entire data transmission bandwidth of the uplink system for each antenna of the terminal without additional overhead.


A method for creating a unique and secure mobile internet protocol version 4 connection for a packet data network is provided. The method includes generating an extended master session key to create a mobile interne protocol root key. The method also includes creating a mobile internet protocol security parameter index based on the mobile interne protocol root key and an access point name. The method further includes deriving a mobile node home agent key based on the access point name. Furthermore the method includes associating the derived mobile node home agent key to the created security parameter index. Moreover the method includes providing the unique and secure mobile internet protocol version 4 connection to transfer data for the packet data network connectivity.

We propose an interference alignment scheme for the L cell multiuser interference channel, where M antennas are used at the base stations and N antennas are used at user terminals. To handle the large number of interference vectors from other cells, the proposed method aligns interference vectors such that they fall in a rank one vector space at the other cell base station receivers. After the alignment, we can achieve the sum DoF (K) values of, K=M when N < 2(L-1), K=L(M-1) when N ≥ (L-1)M. For other cases, we can achieve K=M-L+(L-1) ⌊N/L-1⌋ in the L cell interference network, where ⌊ ̇ ⌋ is the integer floor function. © 2012 IEEE.

One of the key challenges in driving multiple light-emitting-diode (LED) strings for a liquid-crystal-display (LCD) backlight system is to ensure uniform current control. Unequal current sharing between the strings is due to manufacturing spread and temperature variations. In this paper, a novel current-balancing circuit for LED backlights is proposed. A smart combination of an inherent symmetry of circuit and capacitive balancing mechanism enables an efficient and cost-effective current balancing. The operating principle of the proposed method is analyzed, and an appealing generalization is made. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is verified by developing a hardware prototype with a dimming feature to drive a 100-W edge-type backlight system, having six LED strings for a large-scale LCD panel. © 2011 IEEE.

Glass has been a key material for many important advances in civilization; it was glass lenses which allowed microscopes to see bacteria for the first time and telescopes which revealed the planets and the moons of Jupiter. Glassware itself has contributed to the development of chemical, biological and cultural progress for thousands of years. The transformation of society with glass continues in modern times; as strands of glass optical fibres transform the internet and how we communicate. Today, glasses have moved beyond transparent materials, and through ongoing research have become active advanced and functional materials. Unlike conventional glasses made from silica or sand, research is now producing glasses from materials such as sulphur, which yields an unusual, yellow orange glass with incredibly varied properties. This next generation of speciality glasses are noted for their functionality and their ability to respond to optical, electrical and thermal stimuli. These glasses have the ability to switch, bend, self-organize and darken when exposed to light, they can even conduct electricity. They transmit light in the infra-red, which ordinary glass blocks and the properties of these glasses can even change, when strong light is incident upon them. The demand for speciality glass is growing and these advanced materials are of national importance for the UK. Our businesses that produce and process materials have a turnover of around £170 billion per annum; represent 15% of the countrys GDP and have exports valued at £50 billion. We consider joint scheduling and diversity to enhance the benefits of multiuser diversity in an orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) downlink system. The OFDMA spectrum is assumed to consist of N RB resource blocks and the reduced feedback scheme consists of each user feeding back channel quality information (CQI) for only the best-N FB resource blocks. Assuming largest normalized CQI scheduling and a general value for N FB, we develop a unified framework to analyze the sum rate of the system for both the quantized and nonquantized CQI feedback schemes. Based on this framework, we provide closed-form expressions for the sum rate for three different multiantenna transmitter schemes; transmit antenna selection (TAS), orthogonal space time block codes (OSTBC) and cyclic delay diversity (CDD). Furthermore, we approximate the sum rate expression and determine the feedback ratio (N FB/N RB) required to achieve a sum rate comparable to the sum rate obtained by a full feedback scheme. © 2011 IEEE.

The basic physics of nucleation in solid single-crystal nanoparticles is revealed by a phase-field theory that includes surface energy, chemical reactions, and coherency strain. In contrast to binary fluids, which form arbitrary contact angles at surfaces, complete "wetting" by one phase is favored at binary solid surfaces. Nucleation occurs when surface wetting becomes unstable, as the chemical energy gain (scaling with area) overcomes the elastic energy penalty (scaling with volume). The nucleation barrier thus decreases with the area-to-volume ratio and vanishes below a critical size. Thus nanoparticles tend to transform in order of increasing size, leaving the smallest particles homogeneous (in the phase of lowest surface energy). The model is used to simulate phase separation in realistic nanoparticle geometries for LiXFePO4, a popular cathode material for Li-ion batteries, and collapses disparate experimental data for the nucleation barrier with no adjustable parameters. Beyond energy storage, the theory shows how to tailor the elastic and surface properties of a solid nanostructure to achieve desired phase behavior. © 2013 American Chemical Society.
