The latest achievements and new practical recommendations on modern axial compressors for oil, gas and LNG units are explained. Axial compressors are modern and compact turbo-compressors for applications with very large flows. They are used in well-known services such as air-compressors of gas turbines, natural gas services and mixed refrigerant applications (for example, in some large LNG plants). However, they are delicate and fragile compressors. Regarding aerodynamics, surge, stall and operational flexibility the axial compressor is probably the most crucial turbo-machine. There are different configurations and designs available for gear units. The selection of correct design and arrangement of a gear unit for an industrial application to obtain an optimum performance, reliability, and efficiency based on machinery specific conditions and requirements presents challenges to mechanical engineers. Optimum design, manufacturing and configuration of gear units for industrial trains and packages are addressed. Practical notes on conventional gear units, planetary gear units, gear unit reliability and possible failure modes are discussed. Latest technologies and new achievements for gear units are also addressed. Centrifugal compressor purchasers and end-users realise the value and payback of accurate and proper shop performance test and shop mechanical run test. Shop test is a necessary step for centrifugal compressor future reliability and trouble free operation. Procedures and methods to correctly implement shop performance test and shop mechanical run test of process centrifugal performance are discussed. ASME-PTC-10 type 1 performance test should be done wherever possible. The operating range of process centrifugal compressors is limited by an instability range commonly called "surge", which occurs during low flow or high head conditions and can result in extensive damage. There are high expectations to improve anti-surge systems of process compressors to increase reliability as well as energy efficiencies and performance. Practical recommendations on anti-surge system sizing, selection, configuration and design are presented. Considerations regarding stall, choke, dynamic studies, anti-surge loop configuration, recycle cooling, anti-surge valve, instruments and anti-surge system parameters are also discussed. Micro-turbines have many advantages over other drivers (for example, piston engine) such as higher power density, less footprint, lighter weight, low emissions, higher availability, better operation, higher reliability, easier maintenance, great fuel flexibility, low dynamic/shaking forces and fewer moving parts (usually only one moving assembly). Old fashion emergency diesel generators and battery systems have been used for decades in critical emergency units such as nuclear emergency cooling systems. They seem unreliable and unsuitable for modern facilities. Advanced micro-turbine is proposed as a reliable, lightweight and compact solution for emergency power supply applications. Active magnetic bearings installed inside the process gas allow the elimination of lubrication and seal systems. High-speed permanent-magnet motor directly drives centrifugal compressor to meet optimum speed, eliminating gear box. This design offers inherent machinery health monitoring features and very compact and reliable train.
