The latest achievements and new practical recommendations on modern axial compressors for oil, gas and LNG units are explained. Axial compressors are modern and compact turbo-compressors for applications with very large flows. They are used in well-known services such as air-compressors of gas turbines, natural gas services and mixed refrigerant applications (for example, in some large LNG plants). However, they are delicate and fragile compressors. Regarding aerodynamics, surge, stall and operational flexibility the axial compressor is probably the most crucial turbo-machine. Subsea compressor offers tremendous potentials, but also some obstacles. Using magnetic bearings can eliminate lubrication oil system as well as seal system. High-speed permanentmagnet electrical-motor direct-drive technology allows centrifugal compressor to meet optimum speed, eliminating gear box. This design offers inherent machinery health monitoring features and very compact and reliable train. New technology of hermetically sealed direct drive centrifugal compressor for offshore and subsea applications are reviewed and discussed. Latest technologies and modern achievements on direct drive compressor designs, magnetic bearings, permanent magnet motors, cooling systems and train arrangements are reviewed.
