A barite having D90 of less than 5 μm (micro powder barite) was developed to improve the rheology and sedimentation stability of drilling fluid. Laboratory study shows that water base and oil base drilling fluids treated with mixed micro powder barite and API barite have lower plastic viscosity and higher yield point than that of the drilling fluids treated with API barite only. The micro powder barite treated drilling fluids remarkably reduces the equivalent circulation pressure loss. Water base drilling fluid treated with micro powder barite has extreme pressure friction coefficient reduced by more than 8%, and oil base drilling fluid treated with micro powder barite has an improved sedimentation stability. Micro powder barite is an ideal weighting agent for use in extended reach horizontal well and HTHP well.
