Antimicrobial compositions based on the synergistic combination of 2-methyl-3-isothiazolone and selected commercial microbicides where the compositions are substantially free of halogenated 3-isothiazolone, are disclosed. Particularly preferred are combinations of 2-methyl-3-isothiazolone together with benzoic acid, citric acid, sorbic acid, 1,2-dibromo-2,4-dicyanobutane, 1,3-dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantoin, phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, zinc pyrithione or climbazole, that provide enhanced microbicidal efficacy at a combined active ingredient level lower than that of the combined individual 3-isothiazolone and commercial microbicide effective use levels.

The present invention is a process for converting a phosphonate to a hydroxyalkyl phosphonic acid comprising the step of contacting together water, the phosphonate, and a sulfonated or phosphonated heterogeneous catalyst under conditions sufficient to convert at least 50% of the phosphonate to the hydroxyalkyl phosphonic acid. The process of the present invention provides a way of preparing hydroxyalkyl phosphonic acids safely and economically, without corrosive effects.

The present invention is a composition comprising a stable aqueous dispersion of polymer particles having a core comprising structural units of: a) a phosphorus acid monomer, b) an acid monomer, c) a multiethylenically unsaturated monomer; and d) a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated bulk monomer; and a shell comprising structural units of a1) a sulfur acid monomer, and b1) a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated bulk monomer; wherein the core protuberates from the shell and the ratio of the structural units of the sulfur acid monomer to structural units of carboxylic acid monomer in shell is at least 0.2:1. Control of the proportion of sulfur acid monomer units to carboxylic acid monomer units results in an improvement in the viscosity stability of paint formulations containing latexes possessing acorn morphology without sacrificing hiding.
