The antioxidant capacity of the vegetables consumed in North East India was estimated by three different in vitro methods. A total of 22 (twenty two) vegetables were evaluated using the extracts for their ability to scavenge the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, ability to reduce ferric ions determined by Ferric Reducing Antioxi-dant Potential (FRAP) assay and Total phenolic content. The antioxidant capacity was expressed as mg Trolox equivalents for DPPH radicals scavenging and FRAP assay while the total phenolic content was expressed as mg Gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per 100 gm of edible portion of the vegetables. The antioxidant capacity of the vege-tables estimated by the three methods does not vary markedly though the values of total phenolic content was slightly higher compared to that of the other two methods. The highest antioxidant capacity was observed in stink bean and least in cucumber. Based on the antioxidant capacity, the vegetables were grouped into four categories i.e. extremely high, high, medium and low. Stink bean (Parkia speciosa) showed an extremely high antioxidant activity in all the three methods. The vegetables with high antioxidant capacity includes bean leaves, brinjal, mus-tard leaves, potato and pea while pumpkin leaves, radish, tomato, naga chilli, small chilli and hyacinth bean fall in medium and okra, broccoli, banana flower, cabbage, turnip, common beans, cauliflower, carrot and cucumber in low category. © JK Welfare & Pharmascope Foundation. A study was carried out in broiler chicken for comparative anthelmintic efficacy of neem and pineapple leave powder with piperazin hydrate for treatment of experimental Ascaridia galli infection. The affected birds had lower levels of Hb, PCV, Ca and P. The profile changed after treatment with neem and pineapple leave powder which was comparable to that observed after treatment with piperazine hydrate. Neem and pineapple leave powder treatment caused cent percent evacuation of the worms on 28th and 56th day post treatment respectively. © Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2010. Source

The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate histo-pathological, haemotological and biochemical changes in broiler chicken naturally infected with Eimeria tenella. A Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based assay was also done for the detection, identification and differentiation of pathogenic species of Eimeria in poultry. Post mortem examination revealed petechial haemorrhages, oedema, necrosis and sloughing of caecal epithelium. Histopathological evidence showed leakage of blood, oedema and necrosis. Haemotological studies revealed that coccidial infection caused significant decrease in the value of haemoglobin and Packed Cell Volume (PCV). The value of Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) and Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) revealed that caecal coccidiosis resulted in macrocytic hypochromic anaemia. Biochemical serum analysis of coccidial infected chicken showed a significant increase in level of glucose, Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) while there was a significant decrease in the level of alkaline phosphatase (SAP) and cholesterol. In PCR using specific primers for E. tenella only the ITS 1 regions of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) could be amplified. © Asian Network for Scientific Information. Source

A study was carried out to evaluate the change in serum biochemical profile of broiler chickens experimentally infected with Ascaridia galli on treatment with powdered leaves of neem and pineapple and with piperazin hydrate. The control and birds treated with piperazine, neem and pineapple show changes in the level of glucose, cholesterol, total protein, albumin, magnesium, potassium and SGPT. The piperazine treated groups can resist better the decreased in the glucose level compare to the groups treated with neem and pineapple. The serum cholesterol level of the control and treated birds shows increased in level while the total protein and albumin contents decreased in control and treated groups. However the decreased in the neem treated group was higher for total protein while the pipeapple treated group shows higher decrease in the level of albumin. The objective of the present study is to characterize the physicochemical properties and to determine the in vitro antioxidant activity of Albizia stipulata Boiv. gum exudates collected from Northeast India. The total carbohydrate, uronic acid and protein contents, monosaccharide composition and the molecular weight distribution of the purified gum was determined. The powder flow property and preliminary compressibility test were performed on the dried gum exudates. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study was performed to analyze the functional groups present in the structure. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA/DTA) analyses were performed to study the thermal stability of the gum. The antioxidant properties of the gum were evaluated by determining 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl scavenging activities and reducing power. The total carbohydrate and protein contents of the gum were found to be 75.17 ± 3.21% and 2.60 ± 1.05% respectively. The viscosity of 2% aqueous solution of the gum exhibited non-Newtonian type of flow showing pH dependent swelling. Arabinose and galactose were found to be the main monosaccharides present in the gum exudates and the molecular weight distribution of the gum was also found to be polydispersed. Results from DPPH, hydroxyl scavenging and reducing power studies showed the gum possesses antioxidant properties. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Source
