An evidence-based systematic review of annatto (Bixa orellana L.) by the natural standard research collaboration is presented. Patients with prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with moderate lower urinary tract symptoms did not show any benefit in receiving achiote (Bixa orellana) compared with placebo (Zegarra et al., 2007). Zegarra et al. (2007) conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study to determine the efficacy of Bixa orellana in patients with BPH with moderate lower urinary tract symptoms. Inclusion criteria were males aged 50-70 years old, in good physical and mental condition, having at least two obstructive urinary symptoms an average maximum urinary flow. The authors concluded that there was no benefit exhibited by Bixa orellana in patients with BPH and moderate lower urinary tract symptoms.
