Personality traits and cognitive functions were studied depending on a tumor localization in the brain in 21 neurosurgical patients and the results were compared with a control group. In patients with brain damage, mostly affected were personality traits associated with emotion regulation and social interaction (neuroticism, psychoticism and social conformity). Increases in psychoticism and decreases in neuroticism were more expressed in patients with a left-hemisphere localization of tumors. The tumor-induced decrease in cognitive abilities was more presented in performing figurative tasks and less in verbal ones. Verbal functions were more decreased in the group with frontal localization of tumor compared to that with parietal localization.

The Problem of basal meningioma's surgical removal hasn't yet been solved and still is of great importance due to the development of intra- and postoperative complications and their frequent recurrence. All these factors influence the quality of patient's life. In the current study the frequency of recurrence and continued growth of tumors were analyzed, as well as the life quality of 83 patients operated on for basal meningiomas in the Novosibirsk Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics from 1995 to 2008. Of 51 patients neodymium laser was used during meningiomas surgical removal. In 32 cases, the laser wasn't used and patients were operated with the use of modern methods of microsurgery. The use of the laser for surgical removal of basal meningiomas allowed to increase considerably the operation efficacy and reduce the risk of re-occurrence of tumors, and also led to a noticeable increase in the life quality of the patients before, after surgery and in a long-term period. © 2014 IEEE.

Prosthetic joints infection is a serious medical, social and financial problem. Significant achievements in prophylaxis of such infections are well known. In cases of primary endoprosthetics of large joints, the frequency of infection in the leading world clinics is 0.5-2%. However, the approaches to the treatment of such infections are different especially with respect to the antibacterial therapy: choice of drugs, administration routes, treatment course and discontinuation. Under conditions of global growth of resistance in nosocomial pathogens, the choice of antimicrobials requires consideration not only of the formal susceptibility criteria, but also of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic indices.
